XIM Nexus vs Splatoons Motion Controls
« on: 11:56 AM - 11/06/21 »
I started playing Splatoons on my Wii U the other day and it’s really fun! It didn’t even seem to have aim assist I just used motion controls and it was really accurate, the only issue was turning around because I can’t change the motion and stick sensitivities separately so I’d have to compromise motion accuracy if I wanted to turn really fast but This isn’t a problem in Splatoons 2. So how does the XIM Nexus compare to motion controls in Splatoons 1/2?

Nintendo gyro is rubbish compared to NEXUS. I played some Breath of the Wild on Switch yesterday to compare the two.

BotW was very clunky with no configuration options for gyro. It's unsteady and too sensitive, which makes gyro aim a chore.

NEXUS on the other hand has configuration options out the wahoo. It's rock-steady with very fine control over micro-movement.

How a game performs with NEXUS depends largely on the look mechanics. If a game is clunky with a controller, it'll still be clunky with a NEXUS. But if a game has good look mechanics, it'll feel great with NEXUS.

I haven't tried Splatoon yet on Switch, but I was thinking of suggesting it to OBsIV as a guinea pig for Switch support on NEXUS. Not sure if that'll happen, but we can dream...

Now be fair..  ;D
Nintendo has a gyro in the switch handles it also has a pro controller, the switch handles might have a crap gyro, it's one of the few I have not played with, I am scared to use my switch in case it breaks, it feels so fragile everything  about them is crap, but the pro controller does not have a bad gyro. It works exceptionally well, and like every gyro controller, it is dependent on the software implementation to make or break it.

Just out of interest.
How well did the Nexus gyro perform when it was used on the Switch for an apples to apples comparison?

Can't do an apples for apples comparison because NEXUS gyro requires an ST of the game you're playing. Other STs might work, but that's rarely a good option.

It's also not directly supported on Switch, so has to be fed through something like a Titan Two. Hence the desire to have native Switch support and STs.

I haven't tried a Pro controller in BotW, but there's still no configuration options for Switch gyro, which makes it very clunky compared to NEXUS. Just calling a spade a spade...

Cannot wait for Nexus to come out so people can make their own experiences with it! Yes the Switch Pro controller might feel good to you, but only because you havent experienced anything better yet. Just like a LCD TV will look amazing until you saw an OLED one.
Hearing that the gyro modul is placed in the handles should should already tell you everything you need to know ;).

At no point have I said the Pro controller is the best I have used.

The steam controller is better for some games, the PS4/5 are better for other games. I have no bias and use what works for me.

Of the gyro controllers have I have tried they all have differing performances in different games.

But I will openly say most of the time I am using PC games as opposed to console, as using the gyro's via remote system is a pain in the rear sometimes.

When i tried the first Nexus feasibility test, which was a modified Apex and DS4 controller, i liked it a lot. But when i had the first Nexus prototype in hands i quickly noticed how inferior other gyro solutions are, and the DS4+Apex solution already used a lot of algorithms to make it feel right. Algorithms that the controller itself doesnt have. This is similar to upgrading from a Cronus to a XIM, you may like the mouse movements of Cronus but only because you havent tried anything better yet.
Gyro is not a priority in all those controllers out there, which you can tell from the precision those modules have and where they are placed onto the PCB (in the handles, really?!).

The XIM STs will also allow you to use perfect gyro movements across all supported games, and that feels miles better than any exisiting gyro solution coded into a game. If the Switch becomes a supported platform i should maybe do a comparison in Splatoon or Zelda to showcase how bad those native solutions actually are.

Interesting thought..

I have flown RC model helicopters for years which use either single axis or three axis gyro's, I can't count the amount of people who suggested the position of the gyro must be directly under or as close as possible to the main shaft ??

Then they discovered the truth,  it makes no difference to the performance where on the helicopter the gyro is situated as long as the attitude of the axis are aligned correctly with relation to each other, as it was a single unit then it didn't matter as long the vertical axis was correct it would auto calibrate on startup.
It doesn't matter where in the controller the gyro is located.

From sub-par native Switch gyro support to RC helicopters to the physical position of the gyro not mattering. This topic derailed big time lol. The Switch question has been answered, outside of that you had the offer to become an alpha tester to make up your own mind. Since you declined you either have to trust our shared experiences now or wait for Nexus to come out.
I currently feel like trying to convice someone that XIM provides better mouse movements than Cronus, and that the mouse sensor location at the bottom of the mouse has no influence on accuracy...
