I find it so stupid that all the recent (last 6 months) announced monitors don't contain HDMI 2.1 standard for 1080P/1440P monitors. However, the 4K versions almost all of them have HDMI 2.1

Case in point 4K Panels announced in the last 6 months:

Acer Nitro  XV282K
AOC  AGON   AG274UXP
Asus TUF   VG28UQL1A

Gigabyte  M28U
LG  27GP950
Samsung Odessey G7  S28AG700

Why is this? Who is sitting 1 inch from their monitor to notice the differences in pixels at 27"?

Not stupid, is unnecessary and cheaper. For 1080P/1440P at 60/120/144Hz, HDMI 2.0b bandwidth full fills the standard.

HDMI 2.1 bandwidth is for 4K/120Hz/8K/60 Hz/10K/30Hz, VRR, Dynamic HDR, eARC ease connectivity and highest audio quality; 4K TV traits, not gaming monitors.

Asus TUF   VG28UQL1A

It looks interesting option over Dell if you want crosshairs, their selling feature is BFI.

Heads up: To get BFI your system should be able to run 120Hz to 170Hz steady. This feature won't work on consoles.

You get the full benefit of 4k when sitting not further away than 70cm from a 27 inch model. Also pixel density will make text and other stuff look much sharper on 27 inches than on 32.
https://www.rgb.com/sites/default/files/articles/viewingdistanceresolutioncomparison.jpg

Also if you consider yourself a competitive gamer then you shouldnt use a 32 inch monitor, you will not be able to oversee the whole monitor unless you put it at a distance where you could have gotten a 27 inch model in the first place.
Even 27 inches is too large and will make you miss details on the edges.
If immersion has priority over competitive aspects then i agree, the larger the better! :)

From the announced HDMI 2.1 monitors the LG 27GP950 should be the best one, but for competitive aspects i dont think itll be able to rival the benq xl2546k for console gaming. Kinda sucks that there is no monitor that has it all, but until 4k reaches the eSport scene we probably wont see that anyway. And that might require at least 1 more GPU iteration.

I was between a OLED LG48C1 vs Dell S2721DGF.

IMO OLED LG 48C1 is the best TV/Monitor: HDMI 2.1, VRR, FreeSync Premium Pro + G-sync and true HDR, if you don't mind the burn-in risk hassle; I do IPS Nano panel delivers high image quality and smooth performance at 1440p/144Hz.

I see the topic is picking up some traction :)

With regard to BFI, that is not a deal-breaker for me.

For my FPS gaming, all I really want is IPS panel with 1440 120 and VRR working simultaneously, fast response time and crosshair overlay.

If I ever feel like having some 4K single-player fun I will be able to hook it up to A80J, but I doubt that I will do that.

Another consideration is whether or not the monitor has in-built 4K downscaling to 1440p.

The Dell supposedly does not, but if I hook up the 1440p Dell and 4K Asus via a HDMI 2.0 splitter, the PS4, PS5, Xbox One X and Series X consoles all display at 4K @ 60Hz.

This implies that the Dell has 4K downscaling, while the Asus displays at native 4K.

Itís not, really. But it does provide a graphical upgrade over 1080p, which can look a bit crappy on a 27Ē screen. Iíd only do this for single-player games given 4K is capped at 60Hz over HDMI 2.0, e.g. the new Horizon game. Itís more or less a workaround for PS5 until Sony adds 1440p.

I would imagine that if Asus is saying on their website that the monitor fully supports 1440p 60 on PS5 they can only do it through downscaling 4k.

I guess to have 1440 120 on PS5 right now one would have to have a monitor that does upscaling from 1080 to 1440

No screen will upscale a native 1080p signal to 1440p, itíll remain 1080p. On PS5, itís 1080p or 4K only, but a screen with in-built downscaling will support the 4K signal.

The irony here being that most PS5 4K games will be upscaled 1440p via the game engine, whereas 1440p isnít natively supported . Itís all about selling 4K 120Hz HDTVs for Sony that almost no games will be able to utilise (small, simple games like Donut County will be able do it, but not AAA games)

Which means that if you want to play 120 on PS5 all you have is 1080 for the time being :(

Yep :) It looks pretty ordinary compared to 1440p 120Hz on Series X though, so Iíve migrated mostly to Xbox after decades on PlayStation.

That was my original plan too, but I wasn't able to convince my mates to follow suit and ended up getting PS5 where all my mates are or will be
