LOL, I know what you mean.  I love that new electronics smell of some products, especially video game hardware.

And that didn't solve the problem either..I'm wondering if my USB ports are supplying enough power to the xim3..What's the voltage on that power supply thingy in the back?

USB power has to be 5V.  It's the current that might not be enough.  Depending on how many devices are hooked in, each one needs a minimum of 500mA usually.  Not sure how much current the XIM3 needs, but I'm guessing closer to the minimum 500mA.
