Monitor suggestions?
« on: 06:33 PM - 11/14/20 »
In the market for a 2nd monitor, right now i'm on a BenQ XL2411Z 144hz and it's fine but i would like something better and 240hz. What is a good monitor? I'm going to be on the PS5 soon as well. Kinda keep the price down a little bit if you don't mind lol, but it doesn't matter, just nothing to absurd.

https://www.bestbuy.com/site/asus-vg259qmy-displayport-hdmi/6421623.p?gclid=EAIaIQobChMIwpXK2efw7AIVyvezCh31ygVLEAQYASABEgKuOfD_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds&loc=1&ref=212&skuId=6421623

how does this look? it's 24.5" (should i go 27" ??) and is 240hz. i'm using my 24.5" BenQ currently and will make that my secondary monitor for when I stream and browse the web etc, or should I get a ASUS ROG Swift PG278QR 27" ? I just don't think i need a 1440p monitor when i game in 1080p.. i don't know if my current GPU can handle 1440p.. but i know it would be good on the PS5..

Honestly, Id wait. The biggest selling point, for both new consoles, is 4K at 120Hz, but there is a glaring shortage of monitors at that spec, right now.  And what there is is very expensive. Personally, Im waiting until the new year to purchase when I expect to see the big brands competing to win our business and releasing a slew of cheaper hi res/high RR panels. Now is not a good time to buy a monitor for your new console.

Where's HL3?

XIM Apex, PS4 Pro with 1TB Crucial MX500, Allreli T9+, Swiftpoint Z, Aorus AMP500, Audio Technica ADG1X, SB X7, LG 27UD58.

MSI Z97i Gaming AC, Core i5 4690k, Corsair H100i, RTX 2070, 16GB Corsair Vengence DDR3, XFX ProSeries 750w, 3xAerocool Dead Silence, Cooltek W1, 2x500GB Samsung Evo SSDs, 1TB Crucial MX500 SSD, 1TB WD HDD, Silverstone SST slot-load DVD, KustomPC braided cables. And if you've read this far, you too are a genuine geek, my friend!

1440p/120Hz+
Dell S2721DGF (HDMI 2.0)
ASUS TUF Gaming VG27AQL1A (HDMI 2.0)
LG 27GL850 (HDMI 2.0) ~ I Use this monitor, looks amazing and works great. Only thing is it can't do VRR on HDMI at 1440p/120Hz but will do 1080p/120 VRR

If you don't mind waiting I'd check out the EVE monitors that are coming out (HDMI 2.1)

https://evedevices.com/pages/full-specs

1080p/120Hz+
LG 27GL650F-B (HDMI 2.0)
VG279QL1A (HDMI 2.0)
VG279QM (HDMI 2.0)
VG279Q (HDMI 1.4a)

Keep in mind the PS5 does NOT support 1440p resolution or variable refresh rate (which is ridiculous)
The new Xbox supports both.
R5 3600 / Sapphire Pulse 5700XT / 16GB Geil EVO X 3200
Monitor: MSI Optix MAG321CQR
Inputs: Razer Orbweaver / Logitech G502

Who needs 1440p, when you just can go straight to 2160p?
why should you play on a new console with an outdated resolution?

4k, 144 Hz, 1 ms. That is what you want for a new generation console.

I would not buy an outdated monitor with 1440p. So you dont even need this, XBOX isn't better because 1440p. ;D

Gaming Monitor for PS5, right now? - not much or any. Lack of 1440p makes worse.

TV's, well LG 48" OLED CX is the best, being BX the more affordable option for PS5. Follow by Sony's OLED.
But that's a big budget solution.

Besides, no many games are running right now at 4K 120Hz only CoDCW I think, Miles Morales Spidey goes 60Hz on performance mode.

i'm simply confused right now and just looking for a good 2nd monitor. i will keep using my BenQ XL2411Z 24.5" 144hz.

i don't really game at anything above 1080p in my honest opinion, i only play CSGO on my dated i7-4790k GTX 970 and don't plan on upgrading my PC for a while since I have been enjoying console with XIM and getting the PS5. i've always had playstation and enjoy it over xbox, its user preference. both consoles are good imo. just prefer sony. anyways.... yeah call_me_ozne your reply seems fit, are those good monitors for 1080p? i don't care about 1440p or 4k honestly, i have 2 big screen 55" TV's but honestly... i don't console game on them, maybe my ps4 pro will be moved to one of the TV's but i am mainly gaming next to my PC setup.

https://www.newegg.com/black-asus-tuf-gaming-vg279qm-27/p/N82E16824281037 - this one seems pretty good.

edit: i realized i have a Insignia 32" LED TV... 120V-60Hz 50W..... https://www.insigniaproducts.com/pdp/NS-32DR310NA17/4822001 - should I use this to game on my console instead of my BenQ 144hz monitor? It is only 720p though...

Because most games are not going to run at 4K @ 120FPS on console.

A reasonable expectation is 4K @ 60FPS, or 1080p @ 120Hz. The optimal console middleground is likely to be 1440p @ 120FPS.

Many of us would rather buttery-smooth 1440p @ 120FPS than janky 4K framerates.

That said, I'd still go for a 4K, 120Hz, HDMI 2.1 screen to cover all bases.

Chances are that in 2-3 years the PS5 Pro or Xbox Series X X (lol) can handle 4k in 120fps so ill probably go for a 4k monitor too now. Even if Sony will release a 1440p patch this doesnt mean every game developer will make use out of that, or they may just offer it via supersampling which would be kind of useless then.

How does the Xbox Series X handle 1440p? Is it 4k supersampled down to 1440p? Or a true 1440p resolution?

What would be a good 4K 120hz HDMI 2.1 monitor to buy then? I guess I'll go that route for future proofing the monitor with the ps5? lol :)

Gaming Monitor 4K 120Hz HDMI 2.1, as far I know there is none in the market, only TVs. Why? in part because previous GPUs: nVIDIA Turing/AMD RDNA1 on PC didn't support that standard on HDMI, Display Port was enough.

Eve Spectrum 4k 144Hz, is the only monitor promised to be launch with next-gen consoles, that didn't happen still in development, needs to be reserved to get it. No idea of the quality of this brand (they use LG displays).

I prefer to wait for LG, Samsung and its main reliable panel implementors like: Acer, Asus, Dell and Viewsonic start to offer products (3rd quarter of 2021).

I would not buy an outdated monitor with 1440p. So you dont even need this, XBOX isn't better because 1440p. ;D

I miss that argument. Friend, clearly you have no idea how good and popular is 1440p on PC gamers, second behind 1080p. This year LG and Samsung flooded the market with faster 1440p panels. Actually recent GPU gen are intended for 1440p and above, offering the best of both worlds beautiful image on a 120 - 165 FPS range. To run 4K at 120fps or 1080p at 240fps you need a very powerful CPU ($500 usd or above) that doesn't bottleneck with an equally powerful GPU (from $600 up to $1400).

I own a 27" 1440p display from ViewSonic that uses true G-Sync hardware module on a nano IPS panel for my gaming PC, it is a true delight for gaming. I preferred over my 65" OLED 4K TV. -which I'm risking to burn in if playing video games on it-

Sony really mess up putting 1440p aside, I hope they fix it.

Honestly, Microsoft has a more attractive offering: very affordable yet powerful 1440p console and compatible with FreeSync Premium (and XIM Apex... LOL  ;D)

For us Playstation users, well... we are at the moment in a bad spot. Sony has to finish its HDMI forum process certification to unlock VRR (Forum VRR open frame rate adaptive technology, like Freesync or Gsync). I hope with that firmware update also comes 1440p.

Anyways if VRR is introduce we need a Forum VRR certificated gaming monitor, to avoid tearing.

Variable Refresh Rate only works in a range, lets say 48 - 120 fps. Games like Miles Morales work 30fps on fidelity mode... being below the VRR range, we don't have smooth gameplay anymore. This is where another technology pick it up called "Adaptive Frame Insertion" or "Double Frame" which adds double frames to make the display stay on the VRR range. AMD has this technology, is called: LFC (Low Frame Compensation) it comes as complement of FreeSync, on the bundle called FreeSync Premium and FreeSync Premium Pro. PS5 uses an AMD GPU but is still unknown its FreeSync implementation and if LFC comes with it.

LFC is on the end of the GPU, this is important for Xbox Series X/S gamers, if you get a TV or Gaming monitor make triple sure that is at least FreeSync Premium certificated. FreeSync Premium Pro also offers LFC an adds HDR full support.

What a bunch of nerdie stuff, right?... so in short: is too early, stay with your 1080p monitor and wait until Monitors Builders and Consoles put their sh1t together. There is no hurry  8)

I dont think the xl24 monitors support 120fps over HDMI, you would need an HDMI to Displayport cable for that.

I hadn't considered that. My screen supports 4K @ 120Hz over DisplayPort. Would a HDMI 2.1 to DisplayPort 1.4 cable or adapter do the job?

I'll need to do some digging around. That'd save me some significant dough replacing a screen I'm otherwise perfectly happy using for PC & console gaming  ???
