Bad news on the Vimeo front :(
« on: 11:32 PM - 07/21/08 »
http://www.vimeo.com/blog:140

Read it and weep. We are working on a better solution on our own... but in the meantime.. no new HD vids  >:( sorry all :(

I have a lot more to say on this subject, Like how most of thier content on "film" is more than worthless(not an opinion), but I don't want to vent right now so I'll just leave it alone for the time being and look forward.

I wonder what their tolerance for music/game videos, if that's considered "creative" xD  Just take some XIM footage and splice it up into a music video maybe you can make your case that way?

aWW that is sad. I dont want to use windows media HD content hosting from some sever. We could always disguise our gaming videos as random things that no one would eve wach(like family videos). Then we just pos them on the forum and we enjoy HD? Sorry for exploiting you vimeo, but it will only be XIM people abusing it if it works. Hope they dont see this. wHATS your guy's idea?

Infinitum has the right idea. At the start of a video you can just have a character from one team say something like "I will smite you for great justice" and another reply "I will crush you, crush you to goo". It will count as machinima and you're covered.

This site is the vision of one man who started the Machinima craze that it is today. He made the first Counter Strike Movie
written and edited and voiced over by him and his friends. It was shown at the New York Film Festival waaaay back in '99 or 2000. He promotes amateur film makers with live action stuff, anime ( I know everyone can find something they like ) , tournament/CS footage of Professional CS players, and machinima.

Yeah. But wouldn't it just be better to upload to a site that embraces game vids rather than going through the trouble of disguising it. It's a good idea but after reading that blog entry from vimeo why even bother.

They are being lazy about it and already said that they are going to delete some REALLY creative videos that people asked about. Some of the staff are being real pricks about it. In my opinion, they failed as a real solution. They choked, plain and simple. They are discriminating because of... I don't know why. They claim VG vids are not art. First rule of art is that it is subjective. Next rule is that it requires at least some intent. a lot of VG vids are nothing but a walk through a vid of some PvP with nothing else. This isnt art. The simple act of deciding BG music and even taking the effort to sync it. How minor it is, its still art. So yea, they just took the coward's way out.

We will come up with our own HD solution soon (already in the works).

We've looked at noobflicks before, they are a viable solution and support a lot of the same stuff Vimeo does. Vimeo transcoded all materials to a native 24p format that played real nice. Not sure what noobflicks in doing now but they used to be real choppy. I'll upload a vid and see if its any better. It looks like they will support any resolution too so that's good. Also, We will also have our own solution soon, so yea we'll figure something out :P

Wow. And, here I had high hopes for Vimeo. All they would really have to do is change a few simple lines in their TOS and License agreements and they would not be liable for anything that vimeo video creators created. Also, if x person were to make a video of a copyrighted game that a company did not want public yet or whatever... wouldn't that company go after the x individual instead of the Vimeo company. As long as vimeo users agreed that "Vimeo is not reponsible for videos and content posted by it's users. Videos are at THEIR OWN risk" they'd be off the hook. Well, I guess vimeo is just another format that we'll see slowly dying. Poor closed-minded fools.

Wow funny, just a few days ago I was checking out some new services dispite vimeo. Very sad move but I can understand it.

www.wipido.com doesnt look too bad for me.

http://www.wipido.com/video/2207 the vimeo video I uploaded there too.
It doesnt support real HD and doesnt look as good as vimeo but it seems you can get pretty good results there too (even for fullscreen). I havent bothered with really trying to find out what the best settings for uploading are there.

Gamersyde buts pretty decent quality video there in my opinion.
