<cue instrument="violin">
I've been in web design and development for the last 22 years. That sounds ridiculous in my head as 1997 doesn't seem that long ago. I started as a HTML cutter and entry-level designer while studying IT at university, before ditching the degree (web stuff wasn't taught back then) to learn on the job and moved into web project management a year or so later. The next few years went into web production management at a number of ad agencies, before freelancing as a web producer in the early 00's until the end of last year.

I enjoy the creative and problem-solving aspects of web dev, but freelancing is frequently a hard and unrewarding slog. I chose the freelance path to support my then girlfriend and now wife's career, which involved a lot of travel (she's a triple Olympian, Commonwealth Games Gold Medalist and Record holder, was robbed of Olympic Gold by three convicted Russian drug cheats...we're still hopeful of getting the medal). After she retired from sport, we spat out a bunch of kids and I stuck with freelancing to share in the child-rearing duties while she returned to work as a paediatrics physio.

Flexibility over how I spend my time is fantastic, but it comes at a financial cost. The bulk of my work revolved around ecommerce web development and I made other people wealthy in the process. But over the last few years, automation from SaaS sites like Shopify and Squarespace has all but killed the small business web dev market, making guys like me redundant and my future was looking bleak. I remained the last man standing of my colleagues from the past two decades and kept afloat entirely due to securing client retainers and passive income streams very early in my career.

A couple of years ago I decided to stop working for other people. Instead, I wanted to build a couple of ecommerce businesses for myself - selling products is significantly easier than selling yourself at an hourly rate. It's cost me a truckload of time and money, but I wear many hats and can do every part of website design, development and marketing myself, so it's starting to bear fruit.

As of last December, I'm the Australian distributor for XIM Technologies and ConsoleTuner products at https://modsquad.com.au, with a few more distribution deals coming down the pipe. There's still a long way to go to get to where I want to be, but things have kicked off with a bang.

For me, XIM not only changed how I play my games, it's moved my life in a better, more rewarding direction. I've been obsessed with video games for 40 years and I'm finally doing work that I truly love and getting paid to do it. I have enormous respect for OBsIV, mist and Od1n and the work they do around here. The same goes for Jefferson over at ConsoleTuner. I plan to live up to those high standards in my dealings with the Aussie gaming community.

Interesting reading as always, Antithesis. You are one of the half dozen or so regulars that I was hoping would respond to this thread, so thank you.
Your Mrs. sounds even more interesting than you! ;) What sport did she compete in?
I've checked out your webpage. Very professional. Good luck with the new business.

Thanks ceebs. My wife competed in Long Jump, which took us to London on numerous occasions. I love the culture, heritage and parks of London (my mother is from south London) and I felt connected to the place, but I wasn't too fond of knife-wielding gangs of youths.

My better half is also very accomplished professionally (Chairman of the board of Queensland Athletics & multiple other board positions; presenting paeds research later this year in Finland; upper middle management at Qld Health) and is one of those all-round "good at everything" freaks that make the rest of us look bad. I'm the good guy running support in the background and I'm very much batting out of my league, but it's been 22 years, so I'm used to it by now.

The site's a bit of a rush job to get things done by December. I was waiting on a couple of major software releases, but they kept getting delayed, so I had to bite the bullet to get something up there for the silly season. A more robust, prettier and performant version is tucked away in development land behind the scenes : )

By the way, I've read your job description multiple times and still can't wrap my head around it. I've been out in the wilderness for so long that I've forgotten what a proper job looks like! You probably wear a tie and look good doing it. The only time I wear one is to funerals.

My better half is also very accomplished professionally...one of those all-round "good at everything" freaks that make the rest of us look bad.
:D I have one of those, too.

By the way, I've read your job description multiple times and still can't wrap my head around it.
I tried to keep it simple, but clearly, it was a bit too simple. So:

I started my current (and probably final) career 18 years ago (after a tour in the armed forces, another in sales and one in security).
I began as a sales trainer, picked up call assessment, learned to write training and taught myself business coaching. I've worked in many call-centres over the years as salesman, trainer, sales trainer, training manager and Learning and Development Manager. I'm now the Head of Training and Quality in a boutique Contact Centre.
Our call-handlers specialise in taking calls on behalf of multiple clients (as opposed to being on a dedicated campaign handling calls from a single client's customers). This means that they are constantly having to learn new campaigns, so we only hire bright, flexible and intelligent agents and pay them more than the going rate. They each have to be trained constantly on new projects as we take on approximately 2-3 new clients each month, so I have a training team that learns what the agents need to be trained on, and trains them.
We assess the agent's call-handling abilities against an assessment matrix which covers compliance, product knowledge and communication skills. This is done by my Quality Assessors (QAs).
I manage and develop the trainers and QAs. I also develop the call-handler's supervisors and junior managers, so I am heavily involved in Management Development and Coaching.
In order to push the business's skills forward I write a new (and more challenging) Quality Assessment Matrix each year as part of the business's people development strategy, as well as our soft skills development programmes for both agents and their supervisors.
I love my job. :)

You probably wear a tie and look good doing it. The only time I wear one is to funerals.
I wear a suit, but never a tie. Unless Iím at a funeralÖ

Nice, I nearly went into Law Enforcement. I was an MP in the Military. My wife didnít want the stress and for me to work night shift. So I altered my childhood dream job, went back to school and went a completely different route.

I think you nailed it with "live different" RML. That's all I needed to see :)

I love my job.
That's the true secret to success. Unfortunately, most of us have to settle for "do what you're good at" rather than "do what you love".

I've been made redundant a couple of times in my life. Strange how gaming takes up so much job-hunting time!
