[Request] A\V cable mod for 3.5mm jack headsets?
« on: 05:59 AM - 10/23/10 »
I am going to buy a gamecom 357 and heard in one of the other headset threads that I can get full surround sound with the A/V cable mid but I don't know what/how to do it.

Help?

Here goes nothing;

Step 1: Gather supplies; Xbox Original A/V Cable, Red/White audio Conversion Jack, Headset, Saw.

Step 2: Plug in your HDMI Cable into the back of your Xbox, while it is plugged in, try and put the A/V Cable in as well. You can clearly see there is a chunk of plastic blocking your way.

Step 3: Take a marker and draw out a larger shape than the HDMI Cable onto the A/V Cable you plan to cut.

Step 4: Make your cut. It is hollow inside of the plastic shell, do not worry about cutting any wires inside, there aren't any.

Step 5: Plug in your A/V Cable, while the HDMI Cable is STILL plugged in.

Step 6: Take your red and white output from the A/V, plug it into your R/W Audio Conversion jack.

Step 7: Plug the headset into the conversion jack, than set up your audio settings on the Xbox!

Here is a rough picture to demonstrate where the cut is being made. Most people just popp off that entire side of plastic, but I believe it is much safer to still have the wires in the shell casing.

I tried yup search on ebay for the audio conversion cables but all I could get was this
http://Http://cgi.ebay.com.au/Audio-Conversion-Adapter-3-5mm-STEREO-PLUG-2-5mm-JACK-/190455652514?pt=AU_Electronics_Portable_Audio_Accessories&hash=item2c580aa0a2
Would that still work?

And by Xbox original you just mean the Composite/Component cable for the xbox 360 right?

EDIT: Also can anyone link any videos? I thought I understood the Tut above and realised I don't a few minutes ago. So a video would help.
Thanks in advance.

You are literally cutting your Xbox cable where I outlined it in the picture. When you finish the cut it will look like a square hole where the thick plastic piece is.

It's that simple. You cut the cable so it can fit while your HDMI is plugged in.

As far as getting the conversion audio jack, I believe it is called "RCA-Stereo to 3.5mm Audio".

Radio Shack / Circuit city should have them.

So this?
And I don't see how the microphone comes into play here.

EDIT:Wait wait wait... You do realise I want to use a headset with a microphone right? And use the microphone. Right?

I can't find the headset you are talking about, all i see is 367 and 377

If its like this one and has two 3.5mm connectors
http://xellentek.com/Headphones/Headphones/Plantronics_files/Plantronics%20367.jpg

he's saying you need to go from the RCA (red and white) to 3.5mm Female to plug you headset into, that would give you stereo game sounds. You can connect the 3.5mm mic to the controller with an adapter, and set voice to come out of speakers. The mod he is referring to is because you can't fit the fat AV connector on the xbox with an HDMI cable plugged in, unless you have the audio only dongle like the one in the picture here http://www.amazon.com/Microsoft-Xbox-360-Audio-Dongle-Adapter/dp/B003C3R9GK

This might be easier: http://steelseries.com/products/consoles/steelseries-spectrum-audio-mixer-xb#specifications however it is not out yet.

There was another one out from them, but i can only find it on the international site
http://shop.steelseries.com/index.php/accessories/steelseries-xbox-360-headset-connector.html

this is cheap and available now:

Even if you get it to work with the mic, I don't think you'll get surround sound over the analog jacks.  They are only L and R audio signals as far as I know.

If you want surround sound, you'll need to use some sort of sound processor, like an astro mixamp, TB DSS, or route it through a stereo receiver that has surround processing.  And if you do that, You'll want to use an optical connection for the best sound quality

I meant 367 sorry bout that.

So I need RCA Female to 3.5mm female plug my audio 3.5mm from the headset in and just a 3.5 to 2.5 to plug into the controller?
