Sony Nav controller trigger issue...
« on: 01:43 AM - 08/31/16 »
As has been highlighted by numerous good folk around these parts, the Sony Nav controller trigger button doesn't seem to fire until it's depressed most of the way.

I took a look at the Nav's trigger using Device Monitor in Titan One's GTuner app.

1. When plugged into the Xim, the Nav's trigger doesn't activate until about 80%, then pegs straight to 100%.
2. If the Nav controller is plugged straight into a Titan One, the full analog range is available, from 0 to 100%.

The problem doesn't seem be the Nav itself, but the way the Xim reads the trigger data  :o
Given the number of people who use a Nav, maybe this warrants a little digging around to see if it can be improved.

That's strange -- do you see the trigger values move linearly as you press it? The reason I ask is because XIM4 triggers at 50% press.

Nope. There's nothing when plugged into a Xim until about 80% depressed, then straight to 100%, like a digital switch.

Plug it into T1, open device manager and it's full analog 0-100%, with every value in between.

It doesn't bother me as I don't use the Nav, but I know other guys like RML, thepr0 and piiwii have the same problem with their Xim + mouse + Nav setups.

I'm using the latest RC firmware, not the ST tests.

I mean, when you look at the Nav trigger values in T1, as you slowly press the trigger at a constant speed do the values change at a constant rate?

It performs exactly as you'd expect an analog trigger to behave when plugged direct into a Titan One. It's the same as the triggers on a DualShock.

+1 to have this looked at. There is way too much travel right now!

I can reduce it for the next Beta drop.

Thank you! I can see the reasoning behind having a deadzone, I guess if people drop it or brush up against it by accident. But realistically you'd have to drop it pretty hard for it to compress more than like 10-20%.

It's set to 50% right now. Let's try 20 next.

Oh god I can't wait! Thanks!!! This was literally the first thing that stood out to me when I first got a XIM because I was moving over from playing first person shooters on a Wii Remote and the "trigger" equivalent button on the nunchuck is binary and so much faster.

20 sounds much better, but is there a reason it's being interpreted as digital rather than analog?

No reason for asking, just curious  ???

It would be great if it could be opened up completely for us Titan One users to go wild with it but I guess they can't really rework it just for a small subset of us.

But 20 is enough to get me really excited. It's going to feel so much more responsive. I use the trigger for ADS, which is the core mechanic of pretty much every FPS these days outside of Halo, so it's going to really help sharpen my game.

I'd probably just bang a hair-trigger on it anyway, so OBs 20 > 100 approach is likely for the best. I'm merely curious as to why the trigger isn't being passed through as analog.

This would definitely be a significant improvement. I use that trigger for ADS and the deadzone on it is so large it does effect my gameplay. I just presumed it was the NAV design itself - a significantly smaller deadzone would be a very welcome improvement  :)

I too figured this deadzone was of a physical design of the controller.  Now that I expect a fix, I'm extremely excited.

Awesome find antithesis.  Thanks from me and all Nav users.
