Hey guys, long time - no post.

So I just bought a house and i'm planning on having my router in the living room and my computer/xbox in the basement.

Here's what i'm looking for:

what kind of cabling do i need? cat6 (or variant) or should i future proof and go cat7?

does it need to be shielded?

I want to make it look nice, so i'm going to have a 4port ethernet outlet next to the router, along with another one in the basement.
Do the female RJ45 connectors need to be cat specific?

the cat ends are all the same.

go cat 7+ and shielded.  the longer the run the more important the shielding is. also cat 7 gives a reduced slowdown and loss over a longer run.  Although your runs wont be long enough to gain a supreme advantage over cat6, cat 7 is capable of faster transmission.

I would get the latest cat cable your devices can support.

Go with the highest grade your devices support - thats the best piece of advice there but if ur just running cables internally or even channeled into the wall i think unshielded would be fine.  Shielded works better externally and is isnt best used for areas of bends etc.

Do some research and you mught find you dont need to go over the top and could save yaself some cash.

ya, i plan to go through the wall.  it's probably about a 15' distance that'll be covered in the wall.

Distance wont be an issue as max distance on most common ethernet standards are 100 meters (90 for structured and 5 either side for patch cables)

I have a 100ft. CAT5 ran through the attic to the man cave. I have the same performance I had with a 3 ft. cable. 

That being said, I would probably go CAT6 if I ever need a new cable. I don't really see the need to spend the money on CAT 7 ATM.

But hey, nothing wrong with Over Kill.

Thanks for all the advice and information - i'll probably just end up with the cat7 to future proof (never know when/if google fiber or something similar will show up).

now... just gotta make some holes

Somewhat related, I found THIS to be very helpful when I ran a HDTV coax cable from my attic, through the wall, into a media center box in the floor below. Shoving bare wire through that wall was a nightmare. (Once it hit any resistance, the wire would just bunch up and not go any further). This pull rod was strong enough to punch past any resistance.

It's basically a giant, sectioned fly casting rod. The customer criticism that the sections come off while running the cable is real, but I worked around it by duct-taping the sections so they wouldn't come apart. (Also duct taped the cable to the end of the rod I ran through the wall so it wouldn't come loose). OFC, it only works in a relatively straight shot from point A to B as it doesn't bend that much.

Is this the pull rod?  The technicians used something like that to pull the fibre through wire tube in the wall and  under the floor all the way from back of the kitchen to the living room.

i'm gonna borrow a few things from some friends - but after taking a look at where i'm running the cable - it appears as though it'll be pretty easy.

its called a fishing tape or "fish tape"... and usually comes in a reel.

I just put Cat 6 in my house. The difference between Cat 6 & 6A is that 6A will do 10Gbps over 100meters and 6 will only do 10Gbps at 110-165ft.

There is no reason to use Cat 7 unless you've got a router/switch that can use those speeds.
