I have a little lap desk thing that I use when I am on the road. It works pretty good, but there is not much area to mouse. I am fairly low sense so I need some room. I also have a wife and kids and mama don't like xbox stuff all over the living room so I need something that keeps all my stuff together and can be moved easily, and store easily.
Those are the problems and here is the solution - I fooled around with some cardboard for a template and my fold up circle chair and found a shape that fits me and it. I ended up making it ambidextrous and I am glad I did because the left side works well to put an ipad, drink or snacks. I drilled some holes that i put some wire through to hold the controller, doublesided tape for the xim and screwed a couple pieces of elastic to slide my mouse and orbweaver in. Wires are pulled through and wrapped up neatly underneath and handle makes the whole thing easy to grab and move. Then I used a piece of memory foam that my wife covered in fuzzy fabric for cushing under it. You can just use a full pillow but its not as cool and one piece-ish.
The whole thing cost me $0, because I had all this crap already, but I figure you can make your own for less than $30 bucks. It is really slim, holds all my crap securely, and can fit under a bed or standing up in a closet without taking up much space.
I will post some plans and directions up on my site
http://www.makemodhack.com if anybody wants to make their own. For now just pics.
