Have you considered a desk grommet with a cable retractors as a cable management solution?  I realize this picture shows an Ethernet cable, but the concept would allow you to pull out enough cord to game and yet let you easily shorten the cord for storage to there would be less chance of something catching onto the excess cable.  There seems to be a lot of cool looking grommet options.  I haven't seen much in the way of a universal cable retractor but perhaps something like what is in the 2nd picture could be modded?

Working on cutting & applying the laminate this weekend, but have 2 more Questions:

1. I need to get a new gaming mouse, is there a particular model that works best with the magnets?  Thinking of the G502.

2. I'm stateside, what type/size of magnets & where do you recommend ordering them?

Thanks

502 is the ish. Plate on bottom will come off so if basically comes with its own magnetic mounting plate. Just add double sided tape. Sensor has yet to be surpassed for performance.

For my mags on eBay. Something like these - 10pcs N50 Super Strong Round Disc Rare Earth Neodymium Magnets 7 x 4mm Hole 2mm

Post a pic of what you end up with. Always interested in what people change and modify.

Finally finished the desk and the magnets you recommended are not even close to holding the controller or Nostromo keypad in place.  Any suggestions?  Could it be the width of the laminate (didn't think to ask if there are different widths)?  Or just a bad batch of magnets?

Laminate should only be about 1/16 thick. My magnets hold them with ease. I would start there.

Got any pics of desk and said magnets?

My laminate is 1/16.  I'm guessing the eBay seller sent me a weaker grade of magnetes.  I went with a star grommet and I plan to use the extra rubber stopper balls to drill/submerge magnetes to use as cord holders while I'm gaming.  Waiting on mouse pad & Roads custom cushion.  Here are some pics:

Nice job! I like that center grommet. It's always neat to see everyone's layouts. That g502 is a bad mamajamma. My favorite mouse so far.

Those magnets look small. Maybe they are one size less than the ones I have. I'll look tomorrow but I believe mine are a tad bigger than 1/2 inch. It's hard to tell the scale, but yours look closer to 3/8ths or less. Also, on my controller and keyboard the magnets are completely on the laminate, no air gap.

You mentioned that your magnets are a little bigger than 1/2 inch, but the 7mm magnets in your link are closer to 1/4 inch.  Just wondering if that is the issue.  Thanks

Crap. You know what - I prolly posted the wrong link back a few pages too. The magnets are close to 1/2 though. That is definitely the issue.
