Game Over, But Not Completed; the average gamer is now at 37 years old.  (Read 1426 times)

Some rather disturbing news has come out saying that only 10 percent of gamers are actually finishing the games that they purchase.  The new report from CNN discusses the problems that gaming developers are facing in attracting players to the world of the single player experience.
“What I’ve been told as a blanket expectation is that 90 percent of players who start your game will never see the end of it unless they watch a clip on YouTube,” said Activision production contractor Keith Fuller.
The news gets even grimmer from Raptr, an online service that tracks online playing sessions and achievements.  According to the company, only 10% of people who played Rockstar’s blockbuster Red Dead Redemption actually finished the game.
There are a number of reasons this trend is being observed, but much of the blame can probably be attributed to the rise of online multiplayer over the past decade.  Where games used to possibly come with online, today it’s almost standard.  Gamers simply want more.
Added to that is the general rise in age of the gaming population; the average gamer is now at 37 years old.  Time simply cannot be wasted by many who have jobs, families and commitments.
Regardless of how true the numbers are, the decline of single-player is happening.  While it might not be 90%, there is still a lot to be said about the value that multiplayer is bringing to the table, and whether or not single player can last.

Games tend to feel like work after a couple of hours. Repetitive and boring. A 37 that works his a$$ off wants entertainment not work when he plays.
Crusade atm: XIM Mouse that is stable 1000hz at 12000 or higher no delays by smoothing. XIM APEX is ridiculous without a XIM Mouse.

Yea games can become boring very quickly these days.
Once you are over exposed to gaming you expect a lot from newer titles.

If you cut through all the BS in modern games there is a lot less decent story telling.

The last decent single player i remember finishing of late that i thoroughly enjoyed all the way until the end was FARCRY3. Other games feel like a grind..

I've enjoyed every GTA. Never once played online either.
Every NFS (except one I can't think of right now I threw out after 15 minutes.) Never played online with those either.
Depends on the style of game. Obviously FPS I want to play online.

What do they consider "finished"?  100% complete, or just the story-line?  I've finished the story line on a few games, but don't think I have a single game that is completely 100% because of all the random BS side missions and collecting a hundred hidden items.  Like Roads said, a lot of that stuff just turns into grinding, and lots of people just don't have time for that.

they said complete to end.. not 100% complete.

meaning that whatever you did you saw the end of the game occur.  meaning I beat it but maybe I didn't find everything.. but I saw the credits roll!

its funny they mention red dead redemption.  i rented that game, stuck it in.. played about 15 minutes.. took it out and took it back.

I cannot tell you how many games I do this way.  @#$%.... I rent them all... play a few minutes until I get a feel if its for me, if not its out and gone.  I am sure I am not alone and is a large contributor to this issue.

Everyone give games like COD and BF a hard time for having short singleplayer campaigns but if they were too much longer no one would play them. That's why you are seeing the switch to games like Destiny and the Division. Singleplayer campaign in a multiplayer world. We will see more and more of that.

I'm not surprised. You seem to be different from other gamers in so many other ways that this just completes the picture.
I swear to god I will bring forth a rage so complete in it's fury that your innards would boil from the sheer amount of energy pouring from your monitor.

Rook said everything that can be said.

I'm assuming that's because you are more familiar with single anything.

I've always enjoyed the halo storylines.

I've beat every COD SP I've ever played, and BO was the only one I did not beat on veteran.  Though only the first and second MW had decent story.

Mass effect has amazing story, though it did kinda drop off in the last one.  How was earth not destroyed in the first 5 minutes?

Half Life.  Nuff said.

Ok, so I guess I've completed every game I've ever played, technically.  So, like, I must be in the one percent or something.  Biatches.  I do like those achievos...  And I don't have any kids, so...

Some games are just crap that easily get benched for good. On the other hand I found "The Last of Us" absolutely addictive and I felt an emptiness in me after I finished it, because I know I won't be playing a single player campaign has good has that one, for a long long time.

Why do the gaming companies even care, faster on to the next game they are selling...
