I have no relevant credentials but I do test for a living.

My thoughts are that what we know as long comp is more than it suggest. Its just a name, although it suggest something, it may not be what it is.

We are led to believe it is compensation for connections. Im not saying it isn't true but the following is not consistent with that.

I play Dom mostly, there are two halves. "Lag comp" adjust at the mid break. I have had games where that i was great in the 1st half and couldn't do anything the second half.  Example: I remember one game I was 40-1 going into the break, the final score on that game was 49-23. I have had quite alot of experiences like this but not so great scores. I have had alot experiences where the 1st half was terrible and the second half was flawless. What im getting at is that this type of experience is not consistent with the idea that lag comp is comping just connections. It doesn't fit. My connection is steady so why am I getting inconsistent levels of lag comp in each half after the adjustments.

Im not saying this is right or wrong. I not a code monkey nor a networking guy so I will leave my experiences up to those guys to explain. What I know about testing is that my experience does not fit the "lag comp" description.

What boddiebagger calls losing a gun fight means, killing the opposing team 3 times over and dying once.

Please read paragraph two and three.

This is due to the host's conenction not being consistent. Or maybe you migrated hosts mid game?

Maybe a lot of the players you were playing against quit (wich happens all the time) at mid point...and better or players that play differently than the ones you were owning showed up?

A lot of variables there.

When your shots don't register that isn't lag comp. That is your lag. While your connection may be solid or stable that doesn;t mean the host your connected too is. Therefore you get the symptoms of paragraph one.

If you experience a lot of getting hit while running around a corner. or people seeing you before you see them this is a reult of lag comp trying to do its job in a situation where the amount of compensation changes drastically based on the hosts connection. Because the hosts connection directly effects everyone in the games connection.

Therefore constantly increases and decreasing the over all average and amount of lag compensation needed.

In League play if Lag comp does kick in to a noticeable point it is consistantly the same because they are dedicated servers.

I hope this helps.

NinjaX2 i appreciate the shoutout.
didn't i do this three years ago?
and two years ago?
and last year?

sorry, i zoned out four years ago. i dont remember.

people can blame host/lag/compensation/hitmarker/detection all they want. but it boils down more to why are the games laggy in the first place? it's because you're not allowed to route directly to clients on XBL (and PSN AFAIK) for security reasons. traceroute someone you play with and ping them. faaaar different networking than what the console gaming services use.
you cant blame them after the PSN fiasco. and you can IPCM bomb kids iwth the current system. but it could be a lot worse!

its this simple. play with people as local to you on your interwebz as possible and its never a problem.

also. shots registering.

guys... in COD unless you are just massive ping tastic lagass. if you throw up an X hitmarker. you HAVE damaged the target. it's not "backwards" where you lag and *eventually* the damage gets done. you HAVE done the damage as soon as the hitmarker pops locally. what you will find is that you get hitmarkers FIRST and THEN it starts giving you no hitmarkers because "you're dead". the game is simply allowing it to play out too long before it rubberbands and kills you.

that's what frustrated players and they dont understand. you hit three hitmarkers on a 4 hit kill gun quickly, then plow 20 more bullets into a target & you fall over dead. what you gotta realize is it let you play out nearly a second after you died and all those no-registers were from when you were dead.

its not the networking or anything else they should really change. they should endeavor to make the death feedback MUCH faster. why this is so now? who knows. COD4/[email protected] had plenty of lag in them. but people dont complain because guns hit crazy hard damage (1-3 hit kill, not 4-7) and the game didn't let you "live" long amounts of time after dieing.
Somebody didn't read the rules before posting. You need a post count of 100 500 to talk directly to toys.

Has anyone else noticed that if you ADS, the guy who hipfires can kill you faster, even if you're on target shooting?

I'm wanting to say hip shots register before ads, because hip just randomly calculates where a bullet will land right? And on ADS they have to check and make sure you're on target before a hit comes up.

It's hard to have a conversation about lag comp in Black Ops 2 because it seems like they change different aspects of netcode with every hotfix and title update. From matchmaking and how strict the skill based matching system is, to host selection, to how lag comp itself works.

The first few weeks the game launched the game was unplayable unless I messed with my connection. Then late in November it started getting better and better until using a @#$% connection was detrimental and by January to early February it was extremely rare to get instakilled.

I guess noobs in the middle of nowhere with @#$% connections complained they were now getting stomped and the .17 hotfix made it as bad as launch but at this point it's hit and miss.

I just want to know.  If I go and upgrade my Internet to 50mbs down or 105 down.   Is this going to be a viable solution?   I'm wired directly to my router(dgl-4500). Nothing is connected to my router but my phone and Xbox.

I'd say the only inconsistency with my connection is the fact I live in an apartment.   I'm sure my Internet is shared per unit.. Which is about 10 apartments per pole.

Shouldn't we just ridicule those people until they  leave the forum?

I swear to god I will bring forth a rage so complete in it's fury that your innards would boil from the sheer amount of energy pouring from your monitor.

This sealed it for me. Quoted for posterity and for my sig.

Just wondering.   There's a lot of talk about what the problem is, but no solution.

So the conclusion is...  Just deal with it.

Getting more bandwidth most likely won't help your ping if its the same provider, same location, etc. I have 50mb down 10mb up and I always have problems at peak usage times. At like 5-7 when everybody is getting off work and tending their farms on facebook it's always shittier
