yeah it's about $30 something more total if he substitutes the mixamp for the aimon and the desk mic.

Mixamp does voice over usb to the PC and it connects to the controller for xbox audio. I used it because I switched between PC and xbox a lot. Voice quality is not bad with the mixamp, it's nothing like what you hear over xbox live of course. My friend and I both have one, it sounds almost as good over mumble as they do daisy chained together. I also became dependent on dolby headphone so i can never switch back :P

Desktop mic will make you feel like a pro though for sure

So the mixamp will send voice to the controller and to the PC via USB simultaneously?

If yes, then that's not a bad option colb.  Like statab said... like $30 more than my list.  But you end up with Dolby Headphone and less wires.  If you go this route NEVER EVER listen to a DSS.

wait... are you asking what's the best quality PC hardware to pick it up, what the best way to get the audio to the PC is or what microphone gives the best quality?

for a reasonably badass mic, RODE mics are excellent & very popular with the mega anal retentive  streamers/reviewers that work with things like DSLR's.

for best connection to PC
split the optical connection
use the digital A/V output to line level input into a 3.5mm minijack connector
use the analog A/V output to line level input into a 3.5mm minijack connector

for you only audio just split the mic output for a few bucks.

He wants a decent setup for livestreaming that lets the stream viewers hear him, lets him do voice chat over XBL, and still retains decent game sound quality.

There's more to that equation than mic choice.

Yeah it doesn't have to be amazing. As long as It's better than what I have now. Go to the twitch channel and watch my stream from last night. It was turrible.

I'll probably go with the list you suggested. I don't want any delay in my voice audio.

Ok.  If you want it cheaper let me know and I can show you where to cut costs.  Upgrading to the headphone stetab linked wouldn't be a horrible idea.  Those are open air and will be more comfortable.
