This is actually an extremely risky move by Google. They can get sued to oblivion if they aren't careful with the Anti-Trust laws in place.

It's also a clever move. Did you catch that "Free for the first 7 years" part? Yep, I did too. Once Google gets that service up and running, everyone's going to drop their current service provider and join Google. The other ISPs in the area will most likely have to sell their equipment in that area when they go out of business -- and guess who's going to buy it? Google.

So, 7 years later, the free service has ended. Now you have to pay. Guess who all the customers are going to have service with? Google. It's a massive takeover, and they're shutting out all the other service providers. Incredible. They're also helping businesses and firms save loads of cash on their broadband.

It may seem like an awesome thing right now, but 7 years from now, they could be charging a ludicrous amount of money for their service, and they'd own all the lines there so no other ISP can come in to offer lower. It would be too expensive for anyone to do this except for Google. Microsoft and Apple could do this too, but I don't think they're the type of companies to offer broadband.

$70.00 a month after the first 7 years isn't bad at all... Some people pay $60.00 just for Comcast cable internet by its self.

and what difference would that make regarding a regular cable or dsl (fibre) connection do?
the difference in speed is not really needed, i mean what would you want to download actually?
youd run out of hdd space monthly if you really use that connection

No buffering, less compression or even no compression, integrated tv, record eight shows at once. With Google at the helm of a gigabyte network it wouldn't make sense to enforce data caps, they would be the ISP so they would call the shots. The evolution of technology is always welcomed in my book even if there isn't a practical application yet.

Remember at one point Bill Gates said that we wouldn't ever need more than 637 kb of ram in our pc's. :)

Their money comes from advertising, and being a service provider will give them a lot more data for targeted ads and make it easier to deliver ads to people. It would be in their best interest to keep their subscribers.

i see

since like 5 years the biggest german ISPs are integrating these fibre optic solutions in every bigger town
datarates are capped for the moment, as the ISPs want to milk the cow

however what i wanted to say is that it doesnt need to be google to receive those broadbands
google might offer them now, but any other ISPs with fibre optic could easily offer that service too
im not sure how it is in the US, but here is having a good infrastructure a very important role for households, one of the reasons for why the local communes are pushing the ISPs for their investments

for example, my local connection currently is capped to 300 mbit, although it could be a lot higher, theres no service that offers more than that for the  through that line
(im not having that service as its not worth it for me though lol
the ISPs think likewise and dont offer more than that)

It's hardly a "takeover". Verizon FiOs still isn't offered in tons of places. It's not like Google is laying fiber cables all over the U.S....

Excellent analysis! However I also think that, as it stands, some ISPs (ATT and Verizon in my So. California area) are also wireless providers. They may not be able to compete with Google in fiber wherever Google would entrench (save the few Verizon FIOS areas). But ATT and Verizon are already way ahead as wireless ISPs. To survive, I believe they would ramp up wireless broadband service (lower cost and/or increase data limits).

I read in a reddit thread that someone pointed out that Sprint HQ is in Kansas City. This generated a theory that Google aims to financially and physically takeover Sprint, LOL (?).

p.s. I updated the title to make it less cryptic about the topic.
pps. I'm taking my laptop on my business trip just so I could view the TeamEwix stream tomorrow, Xog (and Beezles, et al.)

Google will end up buying Sprint.
Sorry, no macros. It's not a technology limitation of XIM3, it's because it's hard to consider macros not cheating and I don't want XIM to be labeled a cheaters device.

I can only hope! Having Sprint I would love for Google to take over Sprint.

I might switch to Sprint whenever the iPhone 5 comes out. Apparently Verizon is going to make me switch to their tiered data plans if I want to upgrade to a 4G phone from my iPhone 4S. That is unless I want to pay "full retail price" for my next phone. I say screw that, considering the starting retail price for the current generation of iPhones is $649. In the past, my unlimited data plan has been held intact to to the "grandfather" policy, but it looks like they're ending that. (Please correct me if I'm wrong)

The free internet plan is a 7 year deal where you $300 up front or $25/mo. For the first year. It's only 5mb down and 1mb up. I don't see why they would bother to start charging when they have the gigabit lines. I would happily pay the $120/mo. For the tv/internet combo. Those speeds are rediculous. I love google anyways, lol.
