I use sennheiserr phones and the standard xbox mic. I have the mic and earpiece around my neck and put the mic up to my mouth and then i can wear my phones and still hear chat and chat to people. this cost me way less than 150 and it wound way more balanced as far as frequency goes than some turtles or a set of astro's. The surround is also better.

I think most of those brand really pump up the bass sound to try to make it sound better but i think with a better balanced range i have no trouble hearing somebody's footsteps or them reloading on Battlefield 3.

for a strict $150 budget you cant really go with anything other than tritton or turtle beach. id go TB, as im pretty sure the tritton amp is proprietary, and you could upgrade the cans at a later date with a TB offering that included the DSS or DSS2

He probably can't meet that budget with brand new items, but if he's willing to buy used, it's totally doable.

DSS is going for $50 or less on eBay, and the AD700s are anywhere from $65 to $100.

Ad500 is even cheaper and can upgrade drivers later if not afraid to take things apart!

Yep i agree these were the bomb but it had its shortcomings:
too big, they will fall off from your head after an hour
Bass was alsmost not there (using mixamp)
the will make all kind of cracking sounds and felt cheap (made of plastic)
Had to spend more money to make them a headset (Mic Mod)
you looked like an airplane pilot when wearing them
But sound stage was freaking amazing, you can tell where your enemy was farting from.
