Alienware X51 opinions?
« on: 01:32 PM - 02/08/12 »
What do people think about these new gaming rigs?

Seem to be aimed at those who dont know how/cant be bothered to build their own gaming machine?

The specs look quite good for the money. Anyone concidering buying one or are these only aimed at those who dont have a clue about how much a real machine can cost if you shop around?

bad thing is they want to really REALLY over charge you for upgrading (dell/alienware). anything you add jacks up the price almost double the amount that the component you're adding costs.

i'd personally get one of their $2000 laptops before i'd get one of these, but i also build my own pc's

Stick with building your own PC and never look back!
Mouse:
- Logitech G9X 5700 DPI
Keyboard:
- Razer Nostromo Gaming Keypad (So worth the buy!)
Monitor:
- Acer P216HV 21.5" 1920x1080
Headset:
Turtle Beach X12 + DSS2 Sound Amplifier (Truly amazing)

Yep, just read the specs on it... it's slightly above entry level pc. will be better than the "720" but upgrading will probably just as limited.

7200 rpm hdd, no 10,000 or ssd
GTX 555, rather have a 570
4gig ram, should be 8 standard
optical drive, they're $20 new.. shouldnt be a big deal

12 lbs isnt bad...

dont do it gab,  building is the bets way to get the most for your money.
Also alienware and other large brands often have proprietary stuff in so say the psu goes pop,  you can go get a 50 new one from the shop down the road.....nope that will be 300 please.

Not sure if thats the case for these particular machines but I know a lot of the big brands do this.

Wasnt looking at one in truth. Just more interested if these will ever take off or purely a gimmick to attract more console gamers.

You pay more for the label then you do for the hardware.

Alienware has always kinda been a ripoff. I bought a laptop, but if I was ever going to go back to desktop, I would build it myself. Much cheaper, and much more reliable.

If they were going to try and break off a piece of the console market, they may suck in a few people that had no idea about computers, but, 5 minutes of research should cure that...

It's cute how it looks as much as an xbox as legally possible tho...

Btw: 500 posts... Neat-o!

overpriced junk for the money you pay. I only bought my first PC and of course I bought my laptop. But after my first PC, i learned how to get in there and upgrade it and then took a shot and started building my own ever since then. I save hundreds all day long and I have a much better running PC.

Not that Im really in the market to buy a new PC as I wouldnt be able to afford one at the moment due to the kids but I wouldnt stand a chance at building my own! Still I would avoid Alienware for all of the reasons above.

It's more "assembling" than "building"

It's basically legos. If you can put together some ikea furniture, you can do this too.
