So heres how i was going to do my setup:

HDMI(from xbox) to dvi (monitor)

Xbox AV sound ports to computer speakers.

but I cannot have AV and HDMI plugs both plugged in at the same time in the xbox.. If i take the AV plug out and only leave the HDMI, works great. If i try to plug in my AV plug for sound, Xbox shuts down completely.... Whats the issue?

I have this exact setup, except HDMI to DVI for my monitor and AV to 3mm headphone jack (male) to plug into my speaker system. My only problem that I encountered was that both the cords wouldn't fit into the xbox at once because the AV cables connection casing was to big, so I cut it off and everything works fine now.

Are you plugged directly into an outlet or are you plugged into a power strip? I found that power strips caused trouble for my xbox.

EDIT: here's a picture of what I did.

Yeah what Chris said. Just look at my picture in the second post, it's quite easy. Everything works great for me.

then try this : as your xbox boots up press and HOLD down Y+RT till you see the xbox 360 logo
this will reset your display settings.

One question. Why are you trying to use HDMI to DVI?

I would have thought an Xbox 360 VGA cable will do fine.

Im using HDMI to DVI because i got the cord for free, rather than buying a VGA
