I have done them all and currently my favorite is OpenWRT.  What is your preference?

I have to restart every now and then. Doesn't really bother me.

1 or 2 steps above stock from the manufacturer. the next step says "if you install this 1 you cannot go back"
havent checked for an update lately. (like a year)

with the WNDR3700 you can always unbrick or flash to any firmware.

I run tomato.  pretty easy to work with, and I'm used to it.  But I haven't updated in a while, so I should probably check the site.

DD-WRT all the way!

I felt like I was lacking true power with DD-WRT, this is my 4th open source firmware router (bought just for 3rd party firmware).  the WNDR3700 has 680MHz processor 16MB flash 64MB ram, it runs OpenWRT like a champ and is Wireless-N two bands.  I can have DDoS protection, OpenVPN, Samba, Domain Controller, bittorrent.  All on my router.  With DD-WRT i felt like i was using the stock firmware but i never had to restart and I couldn't get QoS to work the way i wanted.

Never tried OpenWRT myself. DD-WRT has just done everything I've ever wanted.  Maybe I'll look into Open a bit. I just bought an E2000 and it's definitely a big step up from my previous router.  I really wanted dual band, but I only spent $20 so I'm happy for now.
