I have been using a KVM switch but keeps cutting out as i switch from console to Laptop.

Discovered Xim link where you use a Transfer cable instead of a KVM switch



Does this still work?

If so does any data transfer data cable work?

Yes XIM Link still works and you must get a supported transfer cable. Since none of those are produced anymore (to my understanding) a website like eBay is your best bet to get a (new) one for under 20-30€.
