lappy with 2 usb ports ?
« on: 06:25 PM - 01/30/08 »
What do you guys do when using this with a laptop that has only 2 connectors ? Do you use a usb hub ? Powered / not powered ? How does it work, any issues I should expect ?

Getting everything ready for the first run tomorrow, want to make sure I'm set.

Get a keyboard that has a ps/2 plug, assuming your laptop has a ps/2 port.

You can use a USB hub as you are suggesting.  They aren't hard to use just plug it into your PC and having it power it will depend on how much power your keyboard and mouse require.  More then likely you won't need to power the hud with an external power supply... but it depends on what hub you buy.

Hope that helps.

I'm hoping to get some real experience with it. I have a hub and it can run powered or unpowered, but I was curious how people have set it up and if one way proved to be better or not. I dont have ps2 on my laptop, just the 2 usb :(

Powered versus unpowered will NOT change the performance of the device.  The external power source is just there incase your PC USB can not supply enough power to the devices that you hooked up to your USB HUB.  Think about it you are trying to split the power of one USB port to several when you hook up a USB HUB.

Anyway, it's really simple to test out on your own.

I only have 2 usb ports on my laptop and had some wierd issues when using it.

I have a merc zboard and it does NOT like to be on a hub and simply will not work.

However the xim and my mouse get along fine on the hub. So I have

mouse and xim on hub>laptop

kb>laptop.

Don't have any idea why it does that, but it's odd like that. Works fine on my desktop when I do that but on my laptop it says "I don't like pie and pie you will not have hahaha" or something like that.

It's worth the wait, one thing about the XIM it doesn't disappoint!  8)

I guess my friend is lucky his lap top has 6 USB ports built on board, that's insane! 4 in the back and 2 on the side. . .
