Game Support / SWBF2 and Destiny 2 Configs for XIM4?
« on: 10:11 PM - 08/14/18 »
Hi! I see that SWBFII and Destiny 2 are both listed in the currently supported games on XIM4 (and APEX).

I have what appears to be the latest XIM Manager (4.00.20160405) & Firmware (4.00.20171004), and my unit is working fine, yet neither of these games appears in the list when I go to create a new config. How can I add them?

thanks!!

maybe you have an ios or android tablet around to run the manager for on-the-fly configuration
Nope. Just an extra expense for something I don't need and would never use. If the APEX manager runs as a Kindle HD app, that'll be great. Otherwise it looks like I'll be using the XIM4 until it stops working. Thanks for the reply, Od1n!

Oh, and thanks everyone for all the device purchase suggestions - even the unnecessarily snarky ones. I'm well aware of what's available out there. If I were addicted to social media or needed a "smart" device for work, I'd have one, but I'm not and I don't.

I don't have a "smart" phone and don't need one. Probably never will. I manage profiles - switching, tweaking, etc. - via BlueTooth from my PC using XIM4 Manager.

I'm concerned by the "wired-only" addition to this management scheme for PC. Does this mean I'm going to lose functionality if I switch from my XIM4 to the APEX?

thanks!

XIM 4 Discussions / Re: Xim4 on PC
« on: 12:34 PM - 12/03/17 »

FWIW to those having trouble, I'm finding that my XIM connects intermittently on a cold boot or restart of my PC. Sometimes it works just fine from a cold start, sometimes not. When it's not working correctly, the icon for the controller in Devices and Printers usually displays a warning and, if I mouse over it, it either pops up "Not Connected" or "Driver Error". In almost every case where I have a problem, if I make sure everything is connected correctly, then completely power down the PC, wait 15 sec., then power up, things work fine.

I'm using a stock XB1 controller, wired directly to the XIM4, which is in turn connected to the front USB port on a Corsair One using the cable supplied with the XIM. Mouse is a Logitech G400s, keyboard is a Logitech G13.

My controller driver is from Microsoft, version 10.0.14393.0, dated 7/15/2016.

BTW - not everyone uses a XIM for the controller aim assist. In my case, it's the easiest way to keep the same audio configuration I use on XB1. I have audio for both my gaming PC and my XB1 being sent via optical output to an A.I. mixer, which drives my KRKs. On PC, the headset connected to the controller is recognized as a Communication Device, so I can use the single-ear chat headset for both systems without having to do anything but move the XIM's USB cable between the two systems. This was a very pleasant surprise, since I was assuming I'd need two completely separate chat audio setups for PC vs console.

There was a spate of controversy on reddit and the Bungie forums during the recent PC Beta for Destiny 2, because Bungie / Vicarious Visions enable aim assist for controllers (and, as it turns out, controller adapters). I'm hoping they resolve that to everyone's satisfaction, but that's not the topic I wanted to discuss, just so I'm clear.

So I've been using a XIM since I started console gaming - first the XIM3 on 360 and now the XIM4 on XB1. Was never comfortable with a controller, and XIM made it so that I never had to bother. I just picked up gaming with MnK on console the same way I used to on PC, and have told people since that the XIM is the best value in a tech widget I've run across.

My personal preference is also NOT to use a gaming headset. The studio monitors I use for gaming are at least an order of magnitude better than any gaming headset, and they shake the room when things get "busy". I've never understood how/why people choose to game on a 55'' monitor and then close their sound up in a set of gaming headsets. Those monitors, coupled with the simple ("one-ear") chat headset with its excellent noise cancelling feature, make for a very nice gaming experience - feels like I'm in a theater, not a tunnel.

Anyway, I've played Destiny since mid-2015 and when Bungie announced it would support it, I decided I wanted to play D2 on PC as well as console. But once the PC beta dropped, the problem I discovered was figuring out how to manage the same audio setup. I tried plugging in a standard USB mic, but ran into problems. I also couldn't hear chat audio over the game. I started shopping for a PC gaming headset until it occurred to me I could just plug the XIM4 into the PC's USB, where Destiny 2 detects it as a controller. Magically, everything just worked - the same as on console. Not only do I now not need to come up with a "close as possible" keyboard mapping (VV's native keyboard mapping prevents a 1:1 setup comparable to XIM on console), but the audio configuration is 1:1.

So, bottom line: kudos to ObsIV & Team, and to Vicarious Visions, for handling the audio channels correctly in their respective products. Communication audio goes where it should (i.e., passed through the controller), game audio goes where it should (i.e., to my main audio mixer), and I'll be able to switch effortlessly between platforms.

Game Support / Re: Destiny 2, how is the aiming ?
« on: 11:17 AM - 09/04/17 »
Hi! You don't define what "worse than OW" means, so it's hard to comment. Lots (millions?) of people have no problem with OW aiming or Destiny aiming - in both cases, getting comfortable with the aiming system is just a skill you learn.

The two games should not (can not) really be compared.

That said, I played for hours on both the console and PC beta for Destiny 2. The aiming system on both is comparable to D1. If strong aim assist bothers you, then that's something you may have to get comfortable with. Why Bungie has chosen to apply such strong AA has been a topic of heated discussion in the Destiny community since it came out, and I still haven't seen a rational explanation. It's most likely tuned that way for PvP (which is why Bungie does anything) - they want to keep the game fast-moving, and have said they feel lowering AA would make that mode frustrating. Who really knows.

One point of note: if AA really bothers you, and you like D2, just run it on PC with a native keyboard and mouse setup and AA will be disabled; it's not considered necessary for native MnK - I played it both with and without the XIM4 on PC, and I agree.

Feedback / Search not working for me
« on: 02:18 PM - 05/22/17 »
I've tried the Search function on both Chrome and Firefox, and neither one works. I enter search terms and click "Search", but the window just refreshes with the message "Did you forget to put something to search for?", and the contents of the "Search for" entry box has been deleted.

Suggestions?
thanks,

Game Support / Re: The witcher 3

Hi RML - I know this is an old thread, but I'm looking for info on this. Just grabbed the 360-compatible version of W2 and ran into a problem selecting certain items from the circular quick menu. Any tips for this? TIA!!

11
I tried tests for a week or so which were all successful. That is, I disconnected the G13 before powering up the XBox and then waited for the XIM4 to finish its power up cycle. I then connected the G13. This always worked fine.

I then flashed the beta firmware. This has also worked fine for several days now (without having to disconnect/reconnect the G13).

I notice that if/when the controller doesn't initialize, the XIM4 appears to do another init attempt, which is successful.

cheers,

U0

Hi mist4fun,

To clarify (see OP), the XIM didn't crash; it failed to boot up when the console was powered up this AM.

The behavior I saw this AM was the same as described in the OP: normal boot light sequence, G13 lights up, mouse LED lights up, controller does not light up, mouse button and G13 keypresses are registered by the XIM (according to the XIM's lights and the Manager display), but are apparently not passed along to the console, as the console does not respond.

To correct, I have to disconnect the XIM from the console, disconnect the controller from the XIM, 'reboot' the controller by pressing its "X" button, hold the "X" and press Up, Right to turn the controller off, reconnect the controller to the XIM and then reconnect the XIM to the console. That workaround has been successful every time.

The trace I pasted, again, was after this successful reset.

Hey Folks,

I swapped out the XIM-to-controller cable and am now using the short one that came with the unit. I had needed a longer cable previously but have since moved things around. The cable connecting the XIM to the console is the braided one that came with it.

This worked okay for a few startups, but this morning the problem came back. Trace output after successfully restarting is pasted below.

cheers,

U0
