Title: My new 5.1 headphones
Post by: Tonester on 02:11 PM - 12/21/09
I was wrong.  Yes, I know... it happens to the best of us.

I got into an e-argument quite a while back on here with some guy who basically trashed the Triton AX Pros (which I had been using along with several other people who love them).  He swore up and down that the Mixamp with a good set of headphones would be better.

I tried out the Mixamp, but I guess I did so on a @#$% pair of headphones.  As such, at the time, I told the guy he was crazy.

So, I got the MixAmp as a graduation gift from a friend.  I have a $100 giftcard laying around for the Apple Store so I bought a pair of Bose around the ear headphones.  I know, these aren't THAT great (especially for the money), but they only cost me $40 so I got them.

The Mixamp + Bose Headphones absolutely trounces my Triton's in terms of sound quality.  The positioning on the Triton's might be like %1-%2 better but jesus, the clarity, crispness, and so forth more than makes up for it.  I can hear guys coming from a much further distance than before and everything just sounds richer, deeper, fuller, cleaner... its so hard to explain other than its @#$% magical.

As for music and movies, its not even close - the Mixamp + Bose are better.

So, whoever that guy is... I apologize.  I was wrong (sort of).  I still stand by my argument that the Triton's might have slightly better positional sound (its really negligible if it exists) but the other stuff is way in favor of the Astro Mixamp.  However, for the price... I think both headsets are awesome.  The Mixamp route is a $250 investment.  The Triton's are half that.

Just got my Trittons and i can say about the same thing.  I'm more of a position guy and the help a good deal with sound direction with the mixamp.  Quality is a good deal less crisp but you can still pick out a guy running around with Ninja on if you turn it up a bit, specially useful in search.  I also have a pair of Sennheiser PC-165's that i use for more casual listening and gaming, and those have a superior sound quality but again... directionality is more of a best guess situation.

This is exactly what I'm hoping to get for Christmas.  Good to hear you love it!

My setup i love:

pc gaming

PC toslink -> Headroom micro DAC -> Headroom micro amp -> Ultrasone HFI-780

xbox gaming

xbox hdmi -> tv toslink -> receiver toslink -> Headroom micro DAC -> Headroom micro amp -> Sennheiser 555

I will replace the ultrasone's with the sennheiser's if im gaming for a while. They hurt my ears after a bit but @#$% they sound fantastic. I run the DAC to the receiver on the TV because i'm lazy and don't like messing with the rats nest behind the tv.

Anyways I highly recommend a decent DAC and headphone amp if you have the money to blow ;)

Question. I'm assuming it's best to plug the RCA cables directly into the mixamp, as apposed to the PC first? I will definitely miss being able to easily swap between headphones and speakers on PC (for last.fm and other things)
Title: Re: My new 5.1 headphones
Post by: tweak on 01:34 AM - 12/25/09
Anyone know if there's an advantage to using toslink or the RCA cables?  I'd like to keep using my VGA adapter and plug in the RCAs, but if it costs me proper sound positioning, then I guess I'll work out another solution.
Title: Re: My new 5.1 headphones
Post by: mbliss984 on 02:00 AM - 12/25/09
Well the advantage to toslink is you are able to keep bit perfect sound. A good DAC will convert the digital (bits) to analog (sound waves) without degradation. Not sure about RCA, never really dove into that area. For example I am able to get bit perfect sound out of the xbox because im using hdmi out to the tv, all bit perfect till it hits the DAC.

To be honest you probably won't notice a big difference when it comes to sound positioning if you were to switch to toslink or RCA. It will be "clearer" and have a better sound quality though, especially if you have very good headphones.

for surround sound, general rule....

RCA=bad
toslink=good

I got the ATH-AD700s today, but no mixamp, so I'm trying to figure out my options.  I like running the Xbox sound through my computer, but I feel as though there's advantages to the mixamp.

And until I can hear them side-by-side I really won't know for sure.

The only advantage that I'm aware of is that the mixamp has the ability to control voice volume separate from game volume.

Also, RCA does not provide surround sound.

I didn't realize that the VGA adapter had the toslink optical audio on it (just looked at it).  Sweet, looks like I'll be set to go once I get the mixamp! :D

What mixamp are you all talking about? I'm curious to know what kind of hardware is behind this thing... Funny thing is high quality capacitors make a big difference with audio equipment.

[blah blah blah]... looking to find a pair at a good price.

At the time I bought mine, Amazon was selling them for $80, but now they're asking for $150 so forget that.

Currently, Provantage seems to have them for the cheapest (http://www.provantage.com/audio-technica-ath-ad700~7AUDT00R.htm).

Here is a cool mod for the ath ad700 http://www.head-fi.org/forums/f4/fragtalitys-audio-technica-ad700-boom-mic-mod-446329/

Nice find! I'll probably end up doing this.

Ok jumping in here with a newb question, since I play at my PC and not at the TV, would this mix amp still work? I was looking at getting a $200 set of turtle beach headphones with mic and hope it worked (the mic part) with the xim controller adapter.

If mix amp works better for in game surround sound, and I can use a mic (right now I used a wireless one ear mic) and be at my pc, I will try it out.

you would hook up your Mix amp to your Xbox with an optical cable.  This is the best option for Dolby headphone plus you will need a good set of headphone with a large sound stage like the ad-700 or senn 595

if you got the cash..... bayerdynamic DT770 Pro80s.

probablly one of the nicest set of cans you can use with the amp without adding an extra amp to power the cans.

your kinda right.....the mixamp allows you to control the "mixing" of the voice into the game audio....

http://www.extremetech.com/article2/0,2845,2299762,00.asp

The main reason I got it is for the dolby decoder...I have the Asus Essence stx on my PC, but Dolby has some sort of stipulation that PC soundcards are NOT allowed to have dolby decoders, so I was stuck with Pro Logic shittiness for a while. Also the ability to raise the chat sound independant of game sound was a big plus too. I'm sure the specs for it are out there somewhere..

A700s are "closed". They have more bass.

AD700s are "open". They have a better sound stage and are better for gaming.

Hi guys, I'd like to jump in. I'm also looking to upgrade from a set of Tritton axpro's. I've read through the threads and checked out the posted links. I've seen the ad700's recommended alot so it looks like I'm going the ad700/astro mixamp route.

I was going to post, asking about mic options, but after looking at that ad700 boom mic mod link I guess that would work pretty good.

So before I "checkout" I just wanted to ask if there are any different recommendation for mixamps or mics?
Title: Re: My new 5.1 headphones
Post by: bill16504 on 02:30 AM - 01/02/10
Alright, after pondering over all your recommandation,  ;) , I've ordered the Sennheiser HD-595, Zalman clip on mic, and the Astro mixamp. Amazon had the Senn's for $178 w/free shipping. The mixamp's are on backorder, but it says their suppose to ship the week of Jan 4th. So hopefully they do get them in.

I didn't mind spending more for the Senn's as they seem to get really great reviews. Plus, I'll sell these Trittons and recoup some of the money.

Shrimpanzee... thank's for that. I will give it a good once-over. It was only $14, but if it is crap I'll just return it to Amazon. What problem did it give you? Have any suggestions for a good mic? I thought about modding a boom mic to fit the headset but then figured a mic was a mic.

Shady... thanks for bringing that to my attention. But what's the y adapter for? I was under the impression the cans just plugged right in to the amp.

Post by: shadykt321 on 02:17 PM - 01/02/10
You plug your headset into one side then your mic into the other and then it goes into the mixamp.Astro used to sell it with the mixamp but now the new mixamp does not come with it. You will need this if you want to have game chat. But the bad news is astro is sold out and they are the only ones that make it.:(
Title: Re: My new 5.1 headphones
Post by: bill16504 on 02:49 PM - 01/02/10
When I ordered the mixamp, the only other options were the recharge pack and different length optic cables. Looking at the pic on astro's site, the mixamp shows separate headset and mic inputs.

You're saying they have a newer model with a different design?
Title: Re: My new 5.1 headphones
Post by: shadykt321 on 07:10 PM - 01/02/10
You have to go under accessories.Everything is the same on the mixamp but they added ps3 hookup without having to buy a extra cable. The mic option on the mixamp is for pc.You need the y-adapter to mix game chat and game sound.Download the pdf file from the astro site for the mixamp and it will show you what you need.I was lucky to do some research cause I would have gone nuts if I got the amp and could not use it.The part you need is only $9.00 bucks.

I just picked up some Turtle Beach HPA2's and bought an adapter for em so they are basically the HPX which are sold out right now. Waiting for my mixamp to come in to see what these cans can do... we'll see, they sound better with stereo than my senheiser pc165's do and the bass is excelent for a headset. Already got a yadapter so all i can do is wait... :(

I looked up that y adapter and, of course, it wasn't in stock. Although it appears to be just a regular 2->1 adapter so I'm thinking I can just run up to Radio Shack and grab one. And it should be cheaper than $9 (hopefully... hard to tell with Radio Shack).

So my Senn HD595's arrived on the 5th... woohoo!
Tried them on, they feel alot more comfortable and lighter than the TT axpro's... woohoo!
Got an email from Astro, the mixamp was shipped... woohoo!
UPS tracking shows it not arriving until the 12th... S.O.B.!

I ordered the MixAmp on Christmas Day and had them send it to my Wisconsin address thinking it would get there before I moved across the country.  Nope.

So now it's on it's way to Wisconsin and I'm in LA where I would have it already since they're shipping from San Francisco.  DAMMIT!!!11

Sorry for the late response.

It's not sensitive enough when using it with the Mixamp. It's great when hooked up to my sound card, but not so much with 360.

I just did the boom mic mod 6 days ago and it's fantastic.

Depends on what your setup is mittyz. It will let you use your headset as a mic instead of wearing it around your neck... :)

The mixamp does the same thing a pc sound card will do, as long as your using a 5.1 surround card.  I dont have a nice card on my laptop so the mixamp is the only option. plus with an optical cable the quality is better than standard rca cables. Also the volume control with this thing is so much easier because you can control game vs chat sounds. It all comes down to can you fork for it.

and mitty if you've got trittons, your going to need the y-splitter from astro to make the mic work.

Yep yep yep... poo poo too. Mine showed up today too. MAN, what a difference! I mean, I was expecting some difference between the Trittons and the Senn hd595, but not this much. So it's off to Craigslist with the Trittons.

I got back on Astro this past Saturday. Not only was the y adapter still out of stock, but they had raised the price a buck (well, $.95). I could have sworn the first time I seen it the price was only $9.

I was looking to just go ahead and order it as the Radio Shack sold the mono and stero plugs, but no 4 pole jack. But when I seen they were still out of stock Saturday I just went on Mouser and ordered the 2 plugs and jack to make my own cable.

And of course now that I'm typing this I just realized that I still didn't order a boom mic yet.

and did anyone figure out another place to buy the 4-pole adapter besides astro?? it sucks they changed the package, when i got my mixamp (which was a year and a half ago, before they changed the look of it) and the mixamp came with all those other adapters, including the 4-pole.

I didn't get the ad700's. I spent extra for the Senn HD 595's. Hey... what the wife doesn't know...

My parts showed up today from Mouser, so I can made my mic cable. I'll just use a small piece of cat cable and some shrink tubing so it doesn't look too generic.

I just can't get over how good these cans/mixamp sound. I was up late playing Darksiders, and a few times I found myself looking around the rooms because I was hearing noises that were actually in the game. And I haven't even tried them with CoD yet.

I finally took the plunge and went with Xav's setup in December, I have yet to fully get to use it though (thanks Astro). Ran into the Y adapter situation. Made it worse by ordering what turned out to be the Quick Disconnect cable for Astro headsets instead of the Y adapter. That stung, $20 plus another $10 for shipping. Just ordered the Y adapter last week for just under $10, but of course they charge insane shipping again of $10 for a 0.40lb wire.

I did manage to rig it up temporarily by shaving some of the rubber off the 360 headset and wedging that and the AD700's into the quick disconnect cable. The Y adapter should arrive next week so hopefully I can finally get to use them as intended.

One cool thing I noticed, I plugged the mixamp via USB into my computer, and the computer sounds come through the headset at the same time as the Xbox audio. It's cool that I can switch back and forth.

I haven't been able to do a good job of hearing directional sounds yet though. I don't know if it's because of how it's rigged or what, but I can hear people approaching me (especially on the snow) but I can't locate them. So usually I'm just spinning around looking for them and then getting nailed.

The sounds are nice and clear though, first thing I heard different on these than when I just used my theater speakers was the pinging sound of the shells hitting the ground while you shoot. I just find that once the war has throttled up, I can't distinguish close sounds from the explosions and gun fire all over the map.

Nice bonus to the new mixamp (haven't tried it yet though) is that it works with Ps3. You can just plug the USB from the mixamp into the PS3 and it's supposed to detect the mixamp as a mic.

Looking forward to the Y adapter coming in next week so I can finally use my mic and no longer need to have the 360 headset around my neck as a makeshift solution.

I totally agree.  This thing sounds amazing but the Tritons I was using did a better job of sound positioning.  I haven't used the MixAmp enough really to decide once and for all which I like better overall.  For my PC and Laptop, the MixAmp is a life-saver - especially for music and movies.  For 360 games, its a toss up and I hope to use it more over the next week or so to decide for good.

I wish I read this post before I ordered mixamp. They want 36$ for the Y cable to Canada.

I just picked up a Diamond XTreme sound something or another from Frys for like $40.  It supports Dolby Digital Live.  All my PC games and MP3s kick so much @#$% now with the MixAmp.

Are you using that Y cable for audio out? If so is it full or half duplex?

Would this cable work, it looks like it has a 4 connector.

I don't think that would work. I used the link from the bottom of page 3 to build my own.

Did your motherboard not have SPDIF/Toslink audio connections?

Astro has the Y adapters back in stock, their shipping charges are stupid, but it's just easier to get it from them than worry about if it will work or not and splicing or making your own.

It doesn't matter if your mobo has SPDIF/Toslink or not - it only outputs to stereo in 99% of them.  It has to support DDL or DTS for it to work and you can probably count the number of mobos that do that on 1 hand.

Same goes for soundcards.
