Title: My XIM review - the biggest weakness...
Post by: piiwii on 07:21 PM - 09/21/14
First of all, I have to say the biggest weakness this product has is not the product itself, but the competition. For years I had avoided trying the XIM because I had read how disappointed people have been with competing products, despite all the glowing reviews. Those glowing reviews by the way I have since learned were probably plants. This made me jaded and very pessimistic about XIM. How wrong I was. I only bit the bullet because I was desperate for a solution and finally gave in. It's literally the best consumer product I have purchased in years. I am absolutely gaga over it. The biggest challenge XIM has I believe, is convincing people who have purchased other hyped up trash products to try just one more time...

Ok now onto the review. There's already a ton of reviews on this site so I will focus on the things that I haven't seen mentioned in the dozen or so that I have read.

1) First of all, the first thing you will notice is there are a lot of cables that connect to it. There are potentially 4 cables pulling the device in all directions, so I found the broad X-shaped design with rubberised feet to be really useful.

2) The sync button is a little sticky and sometimes you need to press it again for it to pop out. From the looks of it, it may not be a problem with every device, and it's not a huge problem anyway. But it's an unfortunate issue in an otherwise flawless exterior.

3) It comes with a nice, long, premium looking braided cable.

4) The postage was lightning fast - 3 days from ordering to the other side of the globe.

5) The software (XIM Manager) was fiddly to sync, even in wired mode, and crashes a lot (vanilla Win 8, latest updates installed). This is perhaps my biggest disappointment.

6) But when XIM Manager works, it's a dream to use. It's very well designed; simple, clear. The only small complaint I have is it would be nice to have platform categories (e.g. PS3, Xbox One) that you could filter by.

7) My biggest complaint so far is that it should have either local or cloud backup. Since getting it, I've had to restore it once, and I've lost all my settings a second time due to some glitch. It can take hours to perfectly configure all your favourite games and to see them all disappear is heartbreaking.

8 ) Online / forum support is amazing. I've seen feedback, both my own and others', responded to very quickly. This is the type of support you want from a product like this and makes you a very loyal supporter.

9) Super minor, uber-trivial detail because I'm OCD - the mouse port should be on the right, since most people are right handed. Those crossed cables don't go well with my OCD:)

10) No iOS support, but I understand this is being looked as a priority

this is on the feature list, theres no ETA yet but its quite high on the list if i recall correctly :)

Thanks for the feedback.

Are you still having issues connecting Manager? That shouldn't happen. We have several connection-related bug fixes in the Beta firmware (in the Release Candidates section) that you should use if you continue to have issues.

Unfortunately yes, the same problems.

I've got two issues:

1) Bluetooth just doesn't connect. It gets detected maybe 1/10 times, but even then I just can't seem to connect it. Other devices connect fine.

2) Wired. It probably crashed literally 30 times on me last night as I was trying to connect. I kept at it because I was obsessed with finding the best key mappings so I was constantly refining and going back.

I also uninstalled, reinstalled, made sure all my Win8 drivers were up to date, rebooted...also tried setting compatibility mode to Win7.

I tried almost every combination and everything seemed to lead to a crash, for example

XIM not plugged in, start app, plug in XIM
XIM not plugged in, start app and wait for it to stop searching, plug in XIM
XIM plugged in, as above
After plugging XIM in, press sync right away
After plugging XIM in, don't press sync right away
etc.

In the worst case, it can crash every attempt for maybe 10 times in a row. In the best case I can connect the first or second attempt.

This is with using the Beta?

Nope, I'm too scared to try Beta:)

I'm using this one:

These constant crashing issues you are having are highly unusual and we need to get to the bottom of it. The Beta has several connection and quality fixes and it has upgraded logging so we can troubleshoot the problem better. It'll be difficult to isolate the issue without the Beta installed.

Do you think I should install Beta? How safe / reliable is it?

Also I notice in your beta page it reads:

FIX: Some connected gaming hardware can cause Bluetooth pairing and connection failures

But I doubt that's the cause of my issue since I use very popular controllers (Nav + G502). Are there other sync fixes in addition to this? If not, then I don't think beta is going to make a difference

It's going to be much more reliable than what you are experiencing right now. Something is very wrong if you are getting issues both wired and wireless. You can always go back to the prior firmware if you'd like.

Ok I'll try it the minute I get home tonight.

Please do a factory restore (copy out your bindings since you'll lose them).

Also, uninstall Manager (clear cache on Android) and re-pair please.

Ok the factory restore didn't do anything, but I have really good news to report. I tried it on a different computer and it seems to work fine. Granted, I only tested it 3 times and I'd like to plug / unplug it another half dozen times to be sure, but the first time it locked up but unlocked itself (the "Not Responding" came up but disappeared), while the subsequent two times were perfect. Fingers crossed...I will do more testing tonight but I think this may be my PC. Which is really weird since my PC is brand new, and both PC's have identical versions of Windows installed (from the same disc, same updates, same build).

Is this using wireless or wired configuration?
Title: Re: My XIM review - the biggest weakness...
Post by: piiwii on 12:29 AM - 09/24/14
Sorry I should have said: wired. Wireless still doesn't work. It gets detected, but when I open the XIM app it crashes. But if I can 100% confirm that it works well wired, then I am happy to get by on this until the iPhone app comes out.

So I'm going to order another bluetooth adapter and try that. Even though it works fine with other bluetooth devices it could very well be a compatibility issue with this specific device (Targus: http://targus.com/AU/product_details.asp?sku=ACB75AU)

Did you allow Windows to install it's stock drivers for this BT adapter?

Also, can you check Device Manager to make sure it doesn't say "Atheros" anywhere for the adapter?

No, I used the standard drivers. I will try the default generic ones tonight!

Yes, please uninstall your BT drivers and let Windows install them for you.

Ok I have done some further testing and here's my results:

1) When physically plugged in, it still hangs on occasion but what I've since realised is that all you have to do is wait about 5-10 seconds and the "(not responding)" goes away. This never went away on my other PC no matter how long I waited. So, it seems to be pretty good so far. It's still not ideal that the "(not responding)" still happens 50% of the time but at least my success rate is way higher now. Out of about 3-4 times I used it, it never once hung completely. On my other PC it hung completely 9/10 times...you can imagine how insane I went trying to setup my games!

2) In regards to wireless connectivity, I uninstalled the Targus provided bluetooth drivers as you suggested and let the default windows one auto-install, then rebooted. After several attempts, it finally worked! However out of the 4-5 other times I tried to get it to work it only picked it up one other time. And when it does work, it always searches for ages before it is found whereas all my other gadgets come up very quickly. Question - when I press the P button on the XIM, how long does it stay in discovery mode before "timing out"? Also I've tried pressing the P button both before and after Windows goes into BT search mode - neither appeared to be more or less successful but which one do you recommend? In the mean time I've also ordered another BT adapter off eBay to see if it's the Targus one that's acting up. That iPhone app can't come soon enough!

It's strange how it works sometimes -- it should either always (nor always not) work. Do you have any other Bluetooth devices? Do those pair and work fine with your hardware?
Title: Re: My XIM review - the biggest weakness...
Post by: piiwii on 07:27 AM - 10/08/14
Sigh. If my unit isn't defective, it kills me to say this product is borderline unusable.

I connected it (via a cable) to the PC at home where I had 80-90% success rates in the past, and I redid some button mappings...and for some reason scroll down wouldn't work anymore when it was fine the last time I did a mapping. So I unplugged it, and plugged it back in and tried again and it was fine.

So I reset to factory defaults...now my XIM is taking literally 50 attempts to connect. I just sit there reclicking "Connect" over and over all night and hope it connects. I've seen the words "Connect failure (Paired XIM4 not found) [6]" so many times now I think I'm going to go insane.

Without iOS support I think I will go out and buy and Android tablet out of desperation but I'm now worried sick this is going to be money down the drain considering bluetooth is so patchy (I bought a second bluetooth dongle and it doesn't connect at all). I'm throwing so much money at this thing it's not funny!

My absolute final resort is to order a second XIM and hope both my PC's aren't just faulty or I'm going to cry. One machine is a brand new build, the second is only about 2 years old. Both totally different parts (diff motherboard brands, therefore different USB ports etc).

Funny thing is, when I go to update my firmware, it's instantly found so I have no idea what's going on anymore. I also tried a different USB cable thinking maybe the included one was defective but no luck.

Ok I've given yup. I've clicked "Connect" about a hundred times now, it won't register anymore. I've uninstalled XIM Manager. I've rebooted - 4 times. I've switched USB ports. I've unplugged everything from the XIM. I've tried connecting the XIM before and after starting XIM Manager. I've tried pressing the button once, and pressing it repeatedly. I've gone back to my other PC to try again.

Now I'm terrified XIM is going to sell out ahead of the Advance Warfare launch so I went ahead and ordered another but now I get this:

"Your Credit Card cannot be charged at this time. Please try again later or contact us for additional assistance."

I've double and triple checked my credit card details:( It's the exact same card I tried to use last time. I would have used PayPal but I don't have money in that account and I don't want to wait an extra few days for the funds to clear.

What do you recommend in the interim? If it won't connect to bluetooth on my PC how likely is it that it'll connect to an Android tablet? If you think the chances are high I'm going to go buy one tomorrow.

OK I have progress. I restored my machine and all is good again (it only fails to connect maybe 20% of the time). So I have two theories. Either some recent software I installed caused issues with it, or more likely some XIM-related files became corrupt.

My leading theory right now is that it's because I need to close XIM Manager before I unplug the device. I will try to do this consistently and see if any problems develop.

Even so I think I will go ahead and order another XIM to compare them, because even an 80-90% success rate doesn't seem all that good. Also because I'd like to have a backup...when it stopped working before I went into a state of panic and it was not a good feeling. I've come to depend on this thing, I can't live without it!

I just sent you a link to our latest Beta drop being tested. It fixes several connection issues. Can you try it out?

Hum seems to be better. I will continue testing over the next few days to see how well it holds up. Thanks so much for that!

If this drop doesn't fix your issues, then we need to go back and evaluate what's going on. This fixes every robustness and connection issue that has been reported here (except for Atheros Bluetooth chipset support that we are working on). We've reproduced every issue here (sometimes took days of attempts since some of these issues are rare) and verified every fix.

Just an update - I went and bought an Android phone just for XIM and it works flawlessly.

Being new I keep the profile manager/commander up and running on my Android tablet as I play games so I can adjust settings and bindings.  I have notice that it I hit the touch screen just right it assumes I am zooming the screen and it zooms in.  Trying to zoom back out doesn't work and I have to exit the program and restart it.  Also the option in the program to turn off the device going to sleep would be nice, my other apps have this option.
