I'll start.
First online FPS game was Quakeworld in 1998. Played it for several years afterwards. Didn't touch Quake 3 because of the limited movement/ air control compared to Quakeworld. Remember the classic Quakeworld games between the likes of LakermaN_of_SC and Kane (the famous Thresh match was slightly before my time). Even played against some of the famous old players.
I get the feeling there are quite a few "old schoolers" with XIMs - maybe some even going back to online Doom. How far back do you go?
Post details of (i) first game, and (ii) first online FPS with mouse and keyboard.
-
I was Online Pong champion.
EDIT: I should add we didn't have XIMs back then. Imagine how good I would have been with a XIM playing pong.
-
I should add - Counter-Strike was viewed with utter and total scorn by old QW players because of the camping it involved. 'CS' was an insult used when someone wasn't playing aggressively in 1v1. I'm ashamed to admit that I'm now playing CoD, the bastard offspring of CS, because nobody plays QW style games on console.

Man I have an intellivision, atari, neo geo, nintendo, super nintendo, genesis, dreamcast, ps, ps2, p3,ps4
xbox, xbox 360, xbox one...nintendo 64...i dunno man I have so many consoles it is unreal. Most of them sit in a closet collecting dust though as emulators do the job for me.
practically every console. I used to have a jaguar and a sega CD but they got broken during a move.

-
I still have most of the consoles, some with boxes collecting dust going back to Coleco including a Telstar and C64.
-
I remember asking for an atari 2600 because all of my friends had one .... I got an odyssey. Oh man were my feelings hurt.
-
My older brothers used to play attari & intellivision, which I kind of started on. But really I was too young, and didnt really start playing games on my own until Nintendo. From there it went sega genesis --> 3DO --> Play Station (which i played for many years).
Then there was a short period with Dream Cast
Then came Xbox and Halo, which was my first FPS. Right around that same time, I also started playing Counter Strike 1.5 (and later 1.6).
Moved to Xbox 360 around the launch, and been pretty consistently used ever since. Been through 4 red rings of death.
Planning to get Xbox One once there is a game worth getting for it.

Atari 2600 was our first console. We progressed from there (NES, SNES, Sega, etc). My first pc game was Combat Flight Simulator. My first FPS was Rainbow Six followed by Rogue Spear and Rainbow Six 3.
This was actually my very first video game. I loved it and played it for hours and hours. My brother had the head-to-head version.

Classic,
Lol,
But I must admit, I did have astro wars as my first rig, followed by puck monster and the usual suspect of the hand held donkeykong.
-
zx spectrum +2 was my first gaming rig... Then the Atari 3200. The spectrum was awesome. Just copy tons of games onto a single spare cassette with a twin deck tape recorder, noting the start times for each game.

Had almost all of these... that Merlin especially, had about 3 of those. Also as far as those sports ones go, anyone remember the baseball one where it was shaped like the stadium, and had recessed buttons hidden for the defense, so you couldn't see what pitch was coming? I know thats pretty generic, but it was from the same era.
I also had an awesome baseball game that you wound up by returning the pitch and and when you got a hit, as indicated by Tue purple streak that lit up, you hit a stopper that told you what it was, like a slot machine... I'm not describing it right, but it was awesome, and I have great memories of those toys!
And btw... colecovision was the absolute bomb! Better graphics, better games, awesome peripherals... remember the sport controllers with the colored triggers and the spinning wheel? The roller controller? Overlays for the regular controller depending on what game it was? Awesomeness!

Burning Rangers on sega saturn anyone? Best song and opening animation....

What I would love is a great FPS or 3d person view remake of Dungeon Hack.

Anyone ever played Guardian Heroes on sega saturn? If you have not, you have not truly lived. Mayhaps the best, most underrated sidescrolling beatemup ever in the history of the Bible and beyond.

you guys are cheating, not my fault i wasn't born in pre-history so of course you guys win xP
honest to God, i have no idea what my first gaming experience was.. i mean, how could i? born in 1987 games were the holy grail for kids all my life. i remember i would be 3 or 4 when i first started gaming but more than that is hard to pin down..
i played all the big 3's consoles plus Sega's and emulated the crap out of some previous one's starting around '99.. but i only owned Gameboy Pocket, Sega MegaDrive(Genesis), Dreamcast and PC. (and now PS3, PSP and PSVita)
i had some weird knockoff console that let you play/shoot Duck Hunt with the light gun, but i have no idea the name of that POS. i was electrocuted messing with that crap when it started failing. first time i was stuck to something due to electricity, for about 3-5 seconds too. that hurt. not much but the panic... i thought it wouldn't stop... needless to say i had fun destroying the thing shortly after.
now about PC gaming, i did play some DOS games but fu*k those, DukeNuken and Doom were really nice OH AND OG Prince of Persia in color - that crap was hard!
before i got net i was forced to "enjoy" DeltaForce - talk about fish AI and poorly designed games, oh Sierra <3 - and playing online at first meant lag around 200-400ms so it was more gambling and shooting in the dark than actual gaming.
then came LANs and CS1.x .. (fu*k Quake/UT that sh1t feels like the drug speed is a requirement, or LSD, or just coke actually)
THEN, they (Publishers) started their canpaign on ruining gaming for all but the mentally impared (joking but kinda true almost) ;D

I hate quoting pics but WOW I had all of those. I remember that car game with the wheel except pretty sure mine had a paper track that scrolled through it. So maybe it was the model prior to the digital one? I remember because the paper roller thingy ripped and I never played it again lol. @#$% if only I had the digital one! I also remember the baseball one somebody mentioned. I also played the crap out of merlin. One of my favorites however was the tabletop pacman. Man I loved that! Used to stay up late at night playing that hah.

My first gaming experiance was on an APPLE IIe. The only game I really remember was Karateka. My first FPS was Doom. I used to play on MBBS before the internet was all the rave. I used a program called SirDoom to be able to play against 4 players at once. When I first started playing Doom, I was on a flight stick Pro joystick. Once I started playing against hardcore guys, I was introduced to the whole mouse and keyboard thing and fast forward quite a few years, I am now using a XIM :)

Been gaming for 31 years this year. First machine was a Toshiba MSX. Then an Amiga, Sega Master System, imported Megadrive and then SNES.
Then got into PC gaming after seeing Team Fortress round a mates. Counterstrike inevitably followed but at the same time I owned the PlayStation 1 & 2 before buying a X360. Still keep an upto date PC as I build my own - but there are less PC gamers I know these days due to mates having kids and careers etc or not being able to afford one.
Currently waiting for XIM4 before purchasing a PS4. I must have spent a fortune over the years on hard and software. At any one time I have at least 10 games on the go, and tons I have bought and not even played yet.
Got my 5 year old son a 3DS for Xmas and now he is basically addicted as well which is sure to double the expense of the "hobby". Oh well - least I will always have some back up on hand for BF5 in a few years...
-
I've been gaming since 1981. I'd say I'm old school enough.

I first played RainbowSix on Mplayer.com and zone.com. Anyone else remember those sites? I then somehow fell into playing Team Fortress Classic from like.....2000ish to 2003? When did you play? That game was awesome.
I haven't been in a clan since 2003 -- went to college and fell out of all that stuff. Only started playing on consoles because it was easier to do versus building a PC and maintaining it.

Was in a couple XL2000 #1 clans waaaay back. MyM, DP, DFA, OSR lol any of those ring a bell? I have a couple old screenshots saved on my pc. Mplayer lobby was 10x better than zone. Loved that site so many great memories. The drawing board was fun!

I am right there with you.
First game I remember playing was on my Apple II e in 1982 called "bolo".

HAHA, man that screenshot takes me way back. Yeah some of those ring a bell. Remember everyone's name had ascii characters? I totally remember Fake 2 Black and Ruthless clan. Man I was running AOL dialup and rocking a horrific Compaq computer. Those were the days. And yes, the lobby was awesome. I won a couple of tournaments and my username was highlighted yellow with a trophy next to it. Remember that @#$%? Hahaha.
I was also in a couple of top clans, but that game bred clan whoring. I also went by like a million different names. I can't even remember half of them. I played that game all the way until the end when some guy named Vertigo created an auto aim program. Obviously the game died pretty quickly after that but it was already on its way out with a lot of people moving to counter-strike.
As much as I enjoy console gaming, there's something much more personal about PC gaming -- the lobbies, the dedicated servers...man you got me reminiscing. Thanks for posting those screen shots.
-
loved the soldier of fortune days, going back to that now is painful. (not payback)
-
Oh yeah the colored names and trophies wow. I hear you on clan whoring. I went by snypa, booger, boog, bizzy, bizzar1 and dp nixon :p

This and atari were about the same time.
Also if other older gamers are out here there was a hand held space invaders type game before hand helds went digital. It was all mechanical it's impossible for me to locate. Like when you would fire something it would be a slide show before it hit the targets. :
Was similar to this but it was bigger and all mechanical.
