As a huge XIM fan, this is why I'm excited about the rumours of MS M&KB support  (Read 461 times)

MS has been talking up M&KB support for ages now, this is not news. But according to the latest IGN podcast, the current rumour is that they are really taking it seriously this time, partnering up with Razer.

Firstly I should address why I think XIM will always have a place - developers always seem to create unusual aim mechanics. A lot of devs can't accept plain-jane aim mechanics and seem to have this burning desire to try to be "creative" when they don't need to be. I don't believe for a second concepts like aim acceleration will disappear even when a game has native M&KB support. Also developers are always terrible when it comes to offering button mapping options, so your ability to remap keys on a per-game basis is always going to be a point of difference with the XIM. Lastly, XIM offers more integration options - JoyCons and Sony Nav's for example.

Now in terms of why I'm excited:

1) Greater range of console-specific peripherals. Right now if you're using a Sony Nav, the only option you have is a G502 mouse because of the need for more buttons. I bet native M&KB support will drive more creative mice designs aimed at the console market. It will also drive more Nav style controller options.

(on a side note - I think XIM should amp up it's peripheral support to combat native M&KB...look at Titan Two, it pretty much supports everything under the sun!)

2) More developers will understand what a good look mechanic is. A bad look mechanic is amplified when using a mouse instead of a stick. Once they are testing their games with a mouse as well, a bad look mechanic will be even more obvious and end up benefiting us all, even non-mouse users.

Cliffs notes: XIM will always have a place in this market, and official (proper) MS support will not hinder XIM at all, but improve it overall. XIM fans should be excited if the platform holders decide to embrace M&KB.

If they're teaming up with razer then I'm betting you're still going to have emulated mouse controls using games' designed controller input. Just like when Sony started supporting licenced keyboard and mouse devices that were basically crappy Xim knockoffs. Would be glad if it's native support but I'm guessing implementation will be limited to only upcoming games.

This is no better than we have today so I think when they say they are taking it seriously, I assume it's more than this.

I agree and I was going to make this point too (XIM would still be needed for legacy games), but fast forward a few years and it's going to be a thing of the past. Still a valid point though.

Or the Razer Naga Trinity. Much better mouse IMO. I hope either Razer or Microsoft creates a better Sony Nav type controller.

HAHAHHAHAHAHAHHAHHAHA

This has been talked about before. It has been done before. Sony has done it. They have had native KBM support in their games since a few console generations ago. They have teamed up with another company to have an Officially Licensed KBM product.

Same old song and dance. They're trying to get PC players to think, "huh, you know maybe I'd like an xbox... "

With all the backlash and crying about "We needz to ban teh Zimmers on mah console games cuz they beat meeee!", do you really think they're just going to open up every game to KBM?

No, they'll pull the same "Just kidding, gotcha!" that Sony did when they pulled this stunt. They'll say that the ability is there and it is up to the devs to put it in their game. Which, of course, none will.

That or they'll release yet another crappy converter that doesn't work.
sudo apt-get install GoldenPistol

As I said in the first sentence, I don't think it's the same thing as before. I truly believe MS will push this properly, due to the cross-platform, service based gaming agenda that they've been pushing.

While I do like that something good might come of this, I think they would need to improve some of the consoleís performance, gaming on 60fps is something Iíve hated as soon as I switched to PC. While itís do-able I still donít like some games like Destiny being dipped down to 30fps and locked like that.

If they do add full native M&K support I really hope itís on next gen consoles so we can get a chance at better performance.

The official guidance from Xbox to developers concerning the addition of mouse drivers in the OS is if the developer chooses to support mouse in their game, then they should matchmake separately based on input type. This is the right guidance since, unlike XIM,  native mouse support has no restrictions and it's an unfair advantage. So, to put it simply, if you want to game with higher populations and with your friends, then, you will need a device like XIM to do so.

Also, I should say that it's clear to me that Xbox isn't actually going all out on this -- it's quite the opposite. Everything they are doing is highly conservative based on their decisions and patterns to put themselves into the position of little to lose if it isn't accepted. They added drivers to their OS  and they they are doing no first party hardware in a space where they accel at (keyboards and mice).

Also, I should say that it's clear to me that Xbox isn't actually going all out on this --

-- Because if they were they'd be partnered with XIM and life would be full of rainbows and sunshine.

Fun a side, you deserve a deal like that and it would actually be a nice win for Xbox. Imagine XIM only available to M$ and heavily marketed like driving wheels and other peripherals. That would be a kick in the anus for Sony. How would they respond? Titan Two?

I don't think there is anything to see here.  This is the same "support" that has existed for ages on consoles.

You will be able to plug a mouse in, and if the game supports it, it will work.

But no developers ever support this.  And even if they did, it would be different matchmaking than with the people using controllers.... which has a ton of edge cases and is a big can of worms.

This will be the same as the PS4 support.... something that no one uses or is even aware of because it doesn't really mean anything.

Yet another press release about big changes coming to MKB on consoles. They never go anywhere, so I'll believe it when I see it!
