I play on default sync and I find that I hit more of my shots if I use 7 smoothing...

I don't even need smoothing, I've tried playing on 0 smoothing, no jitter at all, but it didn't feel right.

Any explanation?

Perhaps it's psychological.

Make two profiles one with 7 smoothing one without.

Set a hotkey that swaps them.

Hit the key loads of times without looking which one your on.

Play like 10 games. Hit the key. Play 10 more.

Check what you were on and see if it had an impact.

I really like this method to decide which config actually feels better
PS4 | i5-6500, 1060 6GB | Samsung C24FG70 | Steelseries QcK XXL | Corsair K65 LUX RGB | Astro A40 TR | Logitech G502 Spectrum | Fortnite One Key Building Script

0 smoothing will give you a smaller aim assist feeling the higher it goes up the more aim assist you feel but at extreme levels for me atleast it makes my aim feel detached is 7 a solid mark though i use 4 as thats the lowest value for me that stops jitter but yeah :D

Hmmmm... My experience has been the opposite. More smoothing = less AA feel. Either way, Smoothing really only effects small movements. A good base line for this IMO is typically between 3 - 8.

The advise above for using two configs is solid and I've done that many times myself. You will see a difference with small movements feeling less "Square or blocky" and more rounded when adding smoothing. That's what it's for and all that it should be affecting as it basically will do nothing with fast movement.

I find that the aim assist is stronger with no smoothing... In games like Fortnite using 0 smoothing I can't break into the hit box as well as I would with 7 smoothing. I've tried every smoothing value and 7 is just perfect.
