Homemade Gaming Lap Desk
« on: 08:42 AM - 04/07/14 »
I have a little lap desk thing that I use when I am on the road.  It works pretty good, but there is not much area to mouse.  I am fairly low sense so I need some room.  I also have a wife and kids and mama don't like xbox stuff all over the living room so I need something that keeps all my stuff together and can be moved easily, and store easily.

Those are the problems and here is the solution - I fooled around with some cardboard for a template and my fold up circle chair and found a shape that fits me and it.  I ended up making it ambidextrous and I am glad I did because the left side works well to put an ipad, drink or snacks.  I drilled some holes that i put some wire through to hold the controller, doublesided tape for the xim and screwed a couple pieces of elastic to slide my mouse and orbweaver in.  Wires are pulled through and wrapped up neatly underneath and handle makes the whole thing easy to grab and move. Then I used a piece of memory foam that my wife covered in fuzzy fabric for cushing under it.  You can just use a full pillow but its not as cool and one piece-ish.

The whole thing cost me $0, because I had all this crap already, but I figure you can make your own for less than $30 bucks. It is really slim, holds all my crap securely, and can fit under a bed or standing up in a closet without taking up much space.

I will post some plans and directions up on my site http://www.makemodhack.com if anybody wants to make their own.  For now just pics.

Well done.  Would *love* to make this for myself and free myself from dragging my table and chair out in front of the TV.  Can't wait for directions and a free weekend.

Excellent job! It looks really stable and I like how everything is secure on it for storage.

Nice, I like the camo color so it can be hidden easily from females.

It looks great. The cost seems reasonable too. If I didn't play at a desk I would be using this.

I think they are just the straps to hold in it place when not in Use.

Been waiting for instructions on how he created his on his website.  Would really like to know what he made it out of and how much it weighs

Sorry guys, I have been slacking. Also, my notifications aren't working for this thread so I didn't actually think anybody wanted this.  Oh well.  I can't find what I did with my pictures while I was making it, so I drew it out on SketchUp.  I am making another scaled down version for my mini me in a day or two.  I am teaching him the dark ways of WASD and mousing.  He gets the edge when the xim4 comes out. I will take pics and get my blog updated upon completion.

For now - Here are pics of the sketchup with dimensions, or you can download the .skp and open/modify/print on your own.

Materials:

1/2 in. x 2 ft. x 4 ft. Medium Density Fiberboard - $10
http://www.homedepot.com/p/Unbranded-1-2-in-x-2-ft-x-4-ft-Medium-Density-Fiberboard-1508108/202089097

3" elastic - $6 or less if you get them to  cut it.
http://www.joann.com/black-knit-elastic/11384385.html

Paint of your choice - I used plastidip - $7

Wire - to hold controller $0, dig around, you have something.

Memory foam pillow for cushioning - walmart has them for $12 or use something else.

Fabric - use an old t-shirt or something

My wife sews crap so she has the girly stuff covered.

Radii are 12" and 1", I have a 24" circle cut out piece of cardboard  i use to block my wheels when I spray shiny stuff on my tires.  You can also use a string/wire and pin to hold it and draw the radius.

This is correct - elastic to hold everything in place.  Works really well.

Whole thing weighs about 10lbs.  With the memory foam you can't tell and I play for hours at a time.  The weight and foam make it really stable.  I usually have a cold beverage way out to the side without even a hint of tipping.
